Social Media is slowly dying with GenZ

Both of my GenZ DS have deleted IG in the last 3 months. One was seriously addicted.

This is my 18 year old, all day.

yep - they aren't posting. they are on youtube shorts or tik tok shorts scrolling what clip farms feed them. The more they scroll the more extreme the content in order to keep them scrolling.

Gen X: I’m on DCUM, Facebook, LinkedIn and instagram. I followed two people on TikTok then I know.

My Gen Z family are on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Snapchat. They don’t look at Facebook.

I understand some people can’t look at this stuff without getting jealous, or obsessed or influenced.

Just like alcohol, it’s not for everybody.

It’s not going away and it’s gonna be part of the workplace so they better learn social media and AI.

I’m in my 50s and love instagram but rarely post. I hate FB. My teenage kids are on instagram and TikTok. One of my kid has had a post go viral.

I think that that OP, via the subject line she chose, is showing either ignorance or aged-ness.

"Normal" kids are not posting on social media, but they are definitely consuming it. That doesn't mean it's dead.

It just means that the 2005 Facebook (or 2015 Instagram) model is dying, replaced by content creators (whether it is a company, media outlet, or an "influencer") who develop material for the masses to consume.

AI will replace social media and already is content wise. Next is your kids spending their time talking to ai companions - getting validation and social needs met that way. SM companies are pouring billions into this. So we will finally get rid of sm, but only for something much much worse. We will long for the days when PEOPLE posted for other PEOPLE. Even now, most gen zs aren't posting (which is why you think it's dying) they are consuming reels. Just wait.

They may not be posting but they’re looking. Schools, sports, activities all use SM for communication.

Facebook has already gone away for anyone younger than 50. The rest of them will all go the way of the fax machine at some point too.

I'm Gen X and social media has nothing to do with validation for me. I'm on FB to see my elderly relatives who post there and the pics of little cousins (a few of whom I've never met).

I'm on Instagram because it's a fun time killer. I have a lot of free time.

Honestly, I only look at twitter when I'm pooping.

Some of my college-age cousins post on Instagram multiple times a week. Some less than once a month. The HS cousins never do.

Exactly this. They didn't give up. They are too busy scrolling aimlessly through videos after videos and getting most of their news from quick insta or X posts.

Basically now people view SM from strangers as opposed to friends like when it started in the late oughts. Posting yourself if you are not trying to be an influencer/content creator has been fading for years and the people routinely posting seem to have low EQ.

I am GenX and scroll Tik Tok. IG feels outdated and poorly organized now. Deleted FB a few years ago. So I use SM like a Gen Z (viewing and maybe commenting) as opposed to an older person who posts about themselves, not realizing that that era has ended.

IG is favored over TikTok among my teens. You might be the outdated one.

I’m glad I don’t know about this.

LOL IG is basically almost dead and generally for millennials, except for one exception--teens posting for their friends when they don't want to use Snapchat. I assume you mean they favor it only for posting and seeing friends' posts (which aren't even that frequent for most teens). For scrolling, they are likely not watching Reels (the two-month old tik tok feed).
