HM has ED2. If HM is the dream. Swat and Rice also have ED2. |
Very high chances of being shut out. It is really the tippy top kids (both academics and EC's) who have a strong shot at HYPSM (30-50% chance) who can afford to SCEA to HYPSM. For everyone else, there is a strong chance of being shut out in RD from T20. |
As others have said it depends on a number of factors, is she tippy top of her class? Does she have impactful EC's? Great recommendation letters? Great essays? My kid used this strategy and did great in RD. I doubt Brown will happen in RD for an unhooked female but not because of yield protection. I would suggest applying more broadly (Penn, Columbia, Northwestern, Cal Tech) if she really wants a T20 and doesn't want binding EDII |
| It's not yield management for the most part, it's applying to highly rejective schools. Be sure to apply to targets and safeties, too. |
+1 1580 SAT, 4.0 gpa, 4.92 gpa from a magnet. CS major. Shut out 5 of the 6 T20, wait listed for 1. Ended up at state flagship with merit. |
Yield management isn’t really a problem except at a few schools. You can mitigate it by visiting and writing good tailored essays. Schools like Pitt don’t yield protect. The bigger problem is low admit rates. If she really wants Brown or HM, maybe ED there. |
| It's usually poor application strategy |
Sounds like counselor steering. If you love Brown, just ED . Counselor doesn’t want you to ED Brown because then they can’t honestly say the other weaker ED applicants are the best of the best. This happens every year. RD is a lot more difficult. |
No chance this kid is shutout from a list that includes Pitt and Lehigh. The doom and gloom on this board is ridiculous. |
Those schools don't worry about yield management. |
If you are applying to target and safety schools then the chances of getting shut out are almost zero. I have only seen it happen when people grossly overestimated their target zone. |
Agree Lehigh and Pitt likely to work in RD of competitive for T10. No worries about pure shutout |
Also true; perhaps another T10 is the ED choice? |
Oh this makes more sense. You can get shut out of that list but that's true whether you SCEA or not. I see no safeties. |
Pitt and Lehigh are not safeties for someone that would be qualified for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford? (The SCEA schools?) That’s crazy talk. |
