Math 7 Honors Teacher refusing to allow retakes becuase it’s the “end of the quarter.”

Why should there be retakes?

I'm with the teacher, but that would be the case even it it's not the end of the quarter.

When you say "retake" - do you mean retaking the same test with the same questions, or retaking a new test with new questions about the same material?

I assume the latter - retaking the same test with the same questions would be fraud.

I have no idea - apparently it’s up the individual teacher on how to handle retakes.

This whole retake thing is idiotic.

+1. It’s 7th grade math. Why would the child need a retake? What difference would it make?

To learn the material better? Sorry you don’t see value in that.

If you believe the teacher is not following the written policies of your school system, you need to email her, cite the policy, and CC the administrator or Principal that it next up the chain.

The child can relearn the material without retaking the test. Sorry you don’t see the value in that.

It’s a county policy. Do you have kids in FCPS?

This retake thing is idiotic. Everyone gets an A! And a trophy!

Math is one of those subjects where I’d think a teacher would encourage retakes - so they can strengthen their skills. It’s helpful to go back and see what you missed.

The retakes policy is appalling.

Well, A-, they can't score better than a 90 on the test.

The retakes are allowed so the student should complain if they think they need a retake. The reality is still that the kids earning A's are the ones doing retakes when they get a B on a test, my kid has retaken 2 tests, one in 7th and 1 in 8th. Both times he had a B and retook the exam so that the A- grade overall returned to an A. I am not a fan but if it is there, he may as well take advantage of it. We discussed what happened on the initial test and what he could do differently to prepare. He only had the 1 retake in 7th, we are hoping for the same in 8th.

But if a kid is taking a test and worried that they are going to need a re-take before taking the test then the kid needs to be studying more.

+1 this exactly. This is a case of an A student wanting an A. Got a B on the test.

Is there actually no retake? Or is there no retake until after the end of the quarter?

If it is in the summative category and no retake allowed, you need to escalate to the admin in charge of the department. That contradicts FCPS policy.

If the latter, that's perfectly acceptable with the rolling gradebook.

You review the test and move on. Kids consistently needing to revise to re-take tests are not paying as much attention to the material being taught at the moment because they are revising the old material. I get needing an occasional re-take because you botch an exam for a number of reasons. If you have to take a re-take after every test, than you have an issue with the pace that the material is being taught at and are in a class that is moving too quickly for where your child is.

That’s easily fine by correcting mistakes and handing it in as a homework grade. Kids need to also learn that they won’t be given retakes in college.

Go start a thread debating the concept of retakes. It's FCPS policy, which is why the OP is asking about the aberration from the policy.
