Math 7 Honors Teacher refusing to allow retakes becuase it’s the “end of the quarter.”

Anonymous
Title says it all. Test was taken Monday this week. The teacher preemptively told the class on that day there will be no retakes because it’s too close to the end of the quarter. We use a rolling gradebook. This is not true and against county policy. How do we handle?

You should escalate this. Its a rolling grade book so it can be updated after the quarter ends. Ask them to confirm this in writing and then escalate as need be.

Tell your kids to study harder next time. There are no retakes in college.

More indication of how sloppy the grading is

Following. Related question for classes giving summative tests Wed, Thur, Fri of this week, how are retakes being handled? Saw gradebooks closed from Oct 31-Nov 10- so is it retakes must happen before Nov 10 to be part of Q1?

Irrelevant.

FCPS students are supposed to be given a retake opportunity within the same grading period/quarter.

My child said that they didn't have exams this week because there would not have been time for a make-up, any test would have been for the second quarter.

I would suggest that your child should have had a few tests by now and should have a good idea about how to prepare for a test. If your child has needed retakes for the various tests in the subject ehn maybe they should be dropping out of honors and into regular math.

It doesn’t work like that. There have been only two summatives. First one didn’t need a retake, and second one does. My child has the right to retake any summative below a 90 to get a 90.

Is it a rolling grade book? If so, does it really matter if the retake is in this quarter or next? Maybe there just isn’t even days to get a retake in with the end of the quarter? When are you proposing your student take the retake between now and Friday?

This is 8th grade math that won't go on your child's transcript. Let it go. At this point, if you force the teacher's hand on a retake, they are likely to make the retake way, way harder than the original test. Your honors student should have studied harder.

If in MS, agree, but this is also happening for seniors applying to college with Q1 grades where does matter and whether anyone here agrees with it, FCPS allows retakes so should be able to do before grade at that get sent to colleges.

When you say "retake" - do you mean retaking the same test with the same questions, or retaking a new test with new questions about the same material?

I assume the latter - retaking the same test with the same questions would be fraud.

I have no idea - apparently it’s up the individual teacher on how to handle retakes.

This whole retake thing is idiotic.

+1. It’s 7th grade math. Why would the child need a retake? What difference would it make?
