ICE is beefing up its spyware—and it’s not just for “illegals”

Bad actors: gays, latinos, liberals, democrats and anyone not straight, white and male.

You forgot illegal immigrants.

Does that include fellow citizens who protest the Trump administration?

If they FA, they will FO.

Sounds like you hate our Constitution? If you loved our country, you would defend our right to protest.

The surveillance state has arrived in a big way and it’s not just coming for migrants; it’s coming for you. Anyone who’s not concerned lacks imagination.

“ Technologies purchased by ICE in recent weeks include an iris-scanning app that agents plan to use in the field, spyware that can hack into smartphones remotely and cellphone location software that can enable the tracking of a phone’s movements without a court warrant.”

“But Democratic lawmakers, civil rights watchdogs and former officials have expressed concern that ICE now has a green light not only to monitor immigrant communities, but also to carry out broad surveillance of Americans exercising their First Amendment right to oppose government action.”

The fear is that the technology will be used to go after “antifa” and left wing organizations (that is, anyone who opposes the Trump administration):

“Left-wing organizations have fueled violent riots, organized attacks against law enforcement officers, coordinated illegal doxing campaigns, arranged drop points for weapons and riot materials, and more,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement Thursday.

The administration is so full of incompetents, will they actually figure out how to use any of it?

They've got Stingrays all over the D.C. area. Stingrays are somewhat antiquated, with more advanced technologies that capture all the data in your cellphone as you drive past. The government can track your movements via your phone. Here is an article written in 2018 on Stingrays:

www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/06/03/cyrus-farivar-book-excerpt-stingray-218588/

You pay for your phone. You pay a steep price for the monthly service. And they steal all the data out of your phone as you drive past one of their towers. Not only that. They can turn your vehicle's smart features or your cellphone's smart features into spying mechanism.

These is the kind of government abuse of power the baby boomers used to be up in arms over.

The boomers are old, and they're tired. New generations need to pick up the baton and carry on with preventing our government from steam rolling over our fragile democracy.

Seems to me the boomers are the ones who got Trump elected and made all this crap happen.

If you think this started under Trump, that is a classic symptom of Trump derangement syndrome.

This has been going on for many, many years. Why don't you dig into internet information? It's a rabbit hole for sure.

Worry about the technology you don’t read about in articles.

Care to elaborate?

If you guys are implying that our government has always been spying on us, I wouldn’t be surprised. But what’s different now is that the technology will be used by an authoritarian government that doesn’t GAF about the law and does not fear any consequences of breaking the law.

Not at all. But I have lived in several dictatorships, including one under martial law, where we couldn’t talk about any of the stuff we talk about in this forum.

So you think the government should enforce consequences on people for protesting against this administration?

NSA surveillance is conducted under FISA, is primarily surveillance of foreign nationals abroad, and needs a warrant from a judge. When Americans have been caught up in it (as happened to Trump staffers) it was because there was someone on the other end of the call who was a foreign actor under surveillance.

If ICE is conducting mass surveillance of Americans without warrants, that's illegal and will need to be investigated and prosecuted. When Trump leaves office, that should be a top priority for the Department of Justice. ICE agents involved in it should be on notice that they are probably going to go to jail for it.
