Ate soup with beans and had regular coffee again Tuesday and now all hell has broken loose. I have had diarrhea since tuesday morning- mostly in the mornings. Then feel ok during afternoon. However last night was up all night going and now have nonstop cramps (not severe) but with little output . Saw GI who sent me home with sample kit to do and said either infection or IBS likely.

This seems extreme. No blood or fever and feel hungry but scared to eat. I have history of colitis (mom) and family members with IBS. I have high anxiety and clear colonoscopy 2018.

GI also said can take Imodium or Pepto but I am not comfortable taking Imodium until an infection is ruled out.

I almost feel like I need the ER but perhaps I am being crazy. I go to the bathroom and feel like I need. to go again 2 min later.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I had this it lasts a good month and it sucks
I’d go to your doctor just to be sure but my symptoms weee same as yours

What was yours?

Do you have health anxiety? Maybe you are shitting your brains out because you of your health anxiety. Either way, it sounds like it came on today and you need to give it time to past through.

Been since Sunday. ER for fluids and to see if I have infection that has treatment. But doubt I will go.

Since Sunday is not even a full week! And somehow you even managed to get in with a GI in the meantime. You aren't vomiting, you shouldn't need fluids. You probably do, or did, legitimately have some virus and subsequent irritation that is still working itself out. Anxiety may well be exacerbating that, as the gut-brain connection is very real.

But it's definitely not an emergency, and you should follow your specialist's advice to take Pepto/Imodium especially since it's affecting your function so dramatically (not being able to go about your business out of the house). Give it time to go away. Even if it ultimately doesn't, you can follow up as a normal outpatient if needed down the line.

You don’t need fluids unless you can’t keep down water. I get the anxiety but really, what you’re describing is really not that major. Don’t go sit in a er for hours, you’ll catch something there. Take the Imodium, hydrate, and eat plainly for a few more days. Stool sample if it continues for another week.

Anonymous wrote:You likely had a virus and your intestinal track/stomach are irritated. Cold brew coffee is going to irritate your stomach if you’ve recently had a virus, even if you didn’t have major symptoms, because it’s acidic. The same with beans. You need to eat a very bland diet for the next week and see how you do.

This - sounds like a virus and your GI system is still inflamed. Stick to the BRAT diet or as bland as you can. Lots of water, replace electrolytes, rest, NO alcohol or coffee. I do not find this super concerning though.

DP- why fluids? Are you not able to keep anything down? I didn’t see you say anything about not keeping fluids down. Is your Pee regular and clear?

You can go to an IV place to get fluids for about $200. Eat bland foods. Deep breathing, a movie, music whatever gets you out of your head. You are ok. You are going to be ok. You are already mostly ok. Stay close to home and chill out.

This. My last GI virus was awful and I will spare the details but it was worse than you’re experiencing OP. What I did:
- drank a half glass of water with electrolytes after every bathroom “incident”
- ate bananas, scrambled eggs and little else for over a week. Everything else made it worse

I did not do Immodium bc I would rather just let my system flush out what it’s trying to flush out. But then hydration becomes critical.

OMG usually they won't even test you until it's been more than a week or you're at risk of severe dehydration

You're going to be fine

I would take some good quality probiotics and try to eat probiotic rich foods (yogurt, kefir, etc.). Have you been on antibiotics recently? They can wreck your gut. Try not to stress.

This is called tenesmus. It is common in any intestinal inflammation, whether infectious or autoimmune. If it lasts longer than a week, you need to see a doc.

Are you the OP who is also afraid of getting rabies?

Is it home brew cold brew? I gave myself gas and green stools making homemade yogurt.
