Why don’t they board planes back to front?

Also, you have to really crack down on people bringing oversized carryons and what not or all the overhead space will be taken before the first several rows of economy get to board.

Fee for carryon, free checked bags. Easy.

Well OK….but no airline will do that and it will make check in a nightmare. Not to mention you need the entire industry to agree to it.

Why would check in be a nightmare?

I think everything would operate more smoothly if people weren’t carting all their luggage all over the airport, let alone clogging up the aisles during actual boarding.

Because everyone on the plane is checking their bags. I guess if the airline doubles their check in staff or figures out a self-serve option…but they won’t do this when now they receive $0 for checked bags and have to increase their employee costs.

Everyone should watch this. It explains it all.

Huh? Checked bags aren’t free now and there is a self serve option. Do you fly at all???

I never understood why it isn't charged this way: free checked bags, $ for carryons.

They actually do but everyone with any status gets on before you.

Yeah…but never check a bag.

I don’t understand your comment on self serve. Are you claiming you get a tag and just throw it on the ramp and never engage a ticketing agent at all across every airline?

Once trying to get out of DCA, the airline told us that due to the delay we might not make it out on time (DCA does not allow flights out after a certain time of night). They had us line up back of the plane to front of the plane outside the gate, and to get on quickly or we'd all get off the plane and stay in DC.

Worked, boarded quickly and made it out.

If you can’t follow the thread then don’t comment. PP was suggesting they make checked bags free vs the current business model of charging for checked bags.

You want 25, 22, and 19 boarding, giving them all enough room to get situated. Then 24, 21, 18 and so on. I’m not sure of the exact spacing but it was something like this.

Anyway, no airline does it. And as someone who checks bags, don’t even get me started on the time wasted by carryon luggage.

While this carry-on nonsense was started by the airlines who decided that you couldn't check bags anymore without paying a fee.

You pay a fee to carryon your bag too. The cheapest fare doesn’t include it usually. You pay for everything one way or another; don’t be fooled. Carryon luggage is why it takes so long to get on and off planes.its also why we have so little headroom.

What airlines are you flying? All of the major carriers include a carryon even in their basic fares.

There have been actual experiments with boarding a plane. Unexpectedly, random boarding is more efficient than back to front.

This is the entire reason. If there was a way to ensure you used the overhead space a live your seat it could work. People are a$$holes and don’t so this will never happen.

No they don’t…United definitely doesn’t.

United and JetBlue don’t allow carryons with their basic fare. You must not fly much.

I guess none of y'all are in the last boarding group with these worries that "the people in the back will use all the overhead space." Because guess what, if you board last now, the people who got on the plane first...use all the overhead space. This is a not enough space issue, I don't get why boarding from the rear would make it worse.

Plus there are discount carriers that charge for carry ons as well. That's why Frontier's tickets look so cheap.

It doesn’t…but now economy plus and other premium seats are at the front of economy. They won’t allow those folks to lose out on overhead.
