Are we still doing goodie bags? If so, what goes inside?

A $5 gift card to a fast food place like Dunkin Donurs, etc, taped to a big bag of chips or movie theater sized candy with a bottle of Prime or another drink.

For 10 kids, it should cost $100 or less, especially you get the chips/candy and drink at Dollar Tree

No goodie bags after 8/9. Kids are old enough to understand that the party and cake was the treat. They give presents to the birthday person (if it's not a no gift party). Quit with the Goodie bags and feel free!

Why does a 10 year old need a gift to take home from a party??

No. Most of it is useless junk the kids will look at for five minutes tops, and adds to the clutter for parents to manage. The party is enough.

It's not a gift. The amount of money that parents spend on candy and little toys in goodie bags you can give a $5 gift card and chips/drink for the same amount and I would bet it will all get used and consumed more then candy and toys.

They don't need to, but it's a fun way of saying thank you and recognizing a friendship. Is it extra on top of the party? Sure. Is it a terrible thing? No. And I totally agree that chips and a $5 donut gift card would be appreciated. My kids would love it.

We always do the birthday child's favorite candies. Sometimes we tossed in whatever the current fad was - Japanese erasers for example. The kids love it. I don't care if parents don't. The party is for kids, not adults.

I’ve never done them personally. It’s not my thing, if others want to do them go for it - I don’t prefer it, but won’t judge others if they do it and I hope they don’t judge me that I don’t. I throw a nice party and kids usually get little things throughout the party so I always consider that plenty for us.

I’m someone that just posted I don’t do them, it’s not my thing, gift giving really isn’t my love language if you will so I kind of hate buying a bunch of stuff for goodies bags. But throwing parties totally is my love language and I think I throw really fun ones that I’m sure would feel like way too much work or over the top to some parents.

I say this all to say - I totally agree with you in the sense that, there are all sorts of fun things to do - do the ones you enjoy and don’t worry about it! If buying Japanese erasers or a fun gift certificate that you know will make the kids light up brings you joy and make them feel like hey we really enjoyed having you then do it! If it’s going to be drudgery for you, it’s ok to skip. And when other parents do it differently be like hey maybe that brings them joy even though it doesn’t me, so glad my kid gets to enjoy that instead of saying it’s stupid crap.

Kids should not be swallowing live goldfish. I know, frat boy stunts seem fun to 10 year old boys, but you can't know they aren't harboring a pathogen.

Why do you think the PP is talking about swallowing the goldfish? Or are you joking?

Because it's funnier than the alternative, which is that some clueless parent would dump a living creature on people who lack the equipment, time, and interest to take care of it.

Ah yes, makes sense now. Agreed.
