My kid got into UGA early action with a 1360 |
+100 So glad you pointed this out. There is a poster who continually brays about the test scores at UVA and W&M - and they're TEST OPTIONAL. Who knows what their true bottom scores actually are. |
UVA and William and Mary tend to be more “holistic” and UGA is moving in that direction. |
Do you realize your kid is just one person and doesn’t represent every student who gets into UGA? |
Maybe OP is talking about CS? These schools accept by major, or at least by college (college of engineering) |
My daughter got into UWMadison this year OOS TO with 3.8w,3.6uw GPA. She is a Bio major so not engineering or CS. Madison puts a lot of weight on their essay and my daughter was involved in a lot of volunteer service which they value heavily, so I think it really just depends on the student and the school. |
UGA doesn't. |
Yes, by today’s standards that is a middling student. |
"Taking AP classes" is not the same as getting 5s on AP exams. I know plenty of kids who took tons of AP classes (and even got As in them!) but got 2s on the AP exams, or didn't bother to take the AP exam because they knew they would do poorly. |
The number of AP courses taken matter more for college admissions to top colleges than the score. Especially for Seniors ( when most AP courses are taken), where most acceptances are granted before the actual AP exam is taken. And to your comment, "A" grades in AP courses are what top colleges want. The score is almost an afterthought. That's part of knowing the nuances of the elite college admissions game some people pay thousands to college counselors for. |
Increased consideration of yield in the admission process, via algorithms from the enrollment management consulting industry, has led to weird results. Plenty of kids with more reasonably-achievable stats get admitted to these schools. Do not assume that just because kid x did or did not get in, that the kid's stats imply the same result for kids with higher or lower stats than them. If kids with good stats are not getting in, the most likely culprit is the algorithm used by the school. The algorithm would account for many factors, including but not limited to the likelihood that the student may (or may not) have not only more prestigious options, but more affordable ones. And, if the student is admitted, OOS merit is all determined by algorithm. |
But who cares if other stats indicate it’s a strong student? The SAT is not a barometer of a student’s ability or future success. It is truly an optional metric. |
Everyone gets an A in AP classes. Grades are irrelevant. |
Michigan is absolutely massive with about 55,000 students. |
That doesn’t change the fact that it gets close to 90,000 applicants from out of state for fewer than 4000 spots. |
