Real ID proves your legal residence in the US. ICE has been showing up at random places to arrest "illegals" so this is a way to prove your right to be here. There was a Reddit thread yesterday about how ICE was hanging out at a Metro station and stopping people, for example.
US Passports and passport cards also prove legal residency. So again, why do we need REAL ID?
Because people carry their drivers licenses with them everywhere - passports are generally not in your wallet all the time. With a passport card, if you want to carry it at all times, go ahead. But that makes the passport more expensive too (because the card is extra). If you don't want a REAL ID don't get one. I don't care. For some people, they are more convenient than carrying a passport at all times.
