Why are people allowed to reek of marijuana in public, even around children?

Anonymous
OP don’t try to reason with these pot smokers. They’ve killed their brain cells and can’t critically think through the issues. Hey morons - no one cares that you smoke pot. What we do care about is that you do it in public ( illegal and it freaking stinks) and that you do it while operating a motor vehicle ( also illegal). No moron - your right to smoke pot does not outweigh my right not to have a bunch of stoned out zombies operating a motor vehicle on the public highways absolutely putting lives at risk. Get it?

This is not a one-time issue. I keep seeing people stepping out of cars or waiting in public spaces smelling strongly of marijuana. It is obvious they have been smoking right before or even inside the car.

Today I saw a parent with their child at a restaurant. The smell was overwhelming. It was clear they had smoked in the car and then drove there with the child. That is not just disgusting, it is dangerous.

I also went to the DMV recently and there were several people in the waiting room who reeked of marijuana. No one said anything, but it was impossible not to notice. It feels like this behavior is just being accepted now.

Shouldn’t the smell of marijuana be probable cause to search someone or their vehicle, especially if they just got out of it? If someone reeked of alcohol and stepped out of a car with a child, they would be stopped immediately. Why is marijuana being treated differently?

This is not about personal freedom. It is about public safety, common sense, and protecting children. DC officials and police need to stop looking the other way. This is getting worse and it needs to be addressed.

Smell? We got out of metro awhile ago, walked about 6 blocks, some through clusters of people getting high. At destination others asked why got high and where at the destination.

You might smell people but frankly in DC those people mght not even been partaking.

The corner of H and 7th St. at Chinatown's metro exit, is free enforcement zone for weed smokers. That is very bad because so many people coming to the city to assist a concert or game in Capital One Arena uses that metro exit.

Basically every legitimate study ever conducted disagrees with you but I'm sure your feels are a much more reputable source...

its horrible and discusting. I get so sad when there are parents with kids in stores what totally REEK of weed. Teachers tell me kid comes to school stinking of it. I'm sad for humanity. It's truly pathetic.

It's disgusting. We had a rental car this weekend that was open when we picked it up. Airport was a zoo and we just grabbed it and bolted. The car reeked of weed so bad all of us got headaches and stomachaches. We complained to the car company but they won't bother enforcing their own rules of no smoking and weed just lingers on people. It's nasty.

I do not smoke, but lady, you can’t ban a smell. Like wtf.

I voted against it too. But many people didn't and now act surprized like they didn't "think it would be this bad!," like WHAT DID YOU EXEPCT?! It makes me angry that people vote without thinking about the future consequences. Only morons would not know how this was going to turn out.

THC is a drug. Pot is a disgusting weed, a stinky oily weed that burns as bad or worse than tobacco.

It’s insane that people voted to make smoking legal right after we had nearly banished cigarette smoke.

Criminalize marijuana smoke. Let them eat gummies.

It’s because we only ever get a choice between extremes. Schedule 1 with cops killing people over a dime bag, or open season smoke clouds over our preschools. No sensible compromise and law enforcement.

No one is getting harmed by second hand smell in public. I’m almost glad that people like you are bothered because you sound totally unhinged. Make sure you give them a stron, judgmental, disgusted look next time you smell a faint smell of weed on someone 😂😂😂. That will make them totally reconsider smoking weed.

No, I do not smoke weed myself.

We smell it every morning at 7AM from multiple cars while driving DS to school. Disgusting.

I feel like we got about a decade when people didn’t smell like tobacco smoke all over and now it’s weed smell everywhere. One decade of decent smelling air. Oh well.

I’m also super concerned by how often I am overwhelmed with the weed smell when I am sitting at a red light with my windows up or walking through a crosswalk. How much are people smoking in their cars that the smell lasts in a crosswalk after they have already driven off? That does not seem safe.

100%. I keep telling my husband that the worst part of sitting in traffic now is being overwhelmed with the smell of marijuana - from other cars. It's disgusting.

Also, to the PP who suggested that the OP was exaggerating the "faint" smell of marajuana, you've obviously never experienced the absolute knock you over smell fro a person's clothing that is literally everywhere - in stores, theaters, etc. It's not a faint smell if it is overwhelming to people standing 6-10 feet away in a fairly open space.

With that said, there's no way to prohibit people from smelling a certain way, so it's the new reality. I will still complain about smelling it when I walk my dogs at 7 a.m., when I drive to and from work, and when I go to the store.

I don't think most people realized that legalizing marijuana would make certain places stink, and expose children to dangerous levels of smoke. Probably because most people didn't imagine others could smoke that much.

I'm all for allowing patients more access to medical-use marijuana. But making it legal for everyone? Eh, what a hassle. I feel the same for alcohol, BTW. It's about the same level of toxicity.
