Why are people allowed to reek of marijuana in public, even around children?

You do you, but you would be absolutely shocked how many extremely productive people use THC during the day. I'm talking senior vice presidents of major organizations, big law partners, doctors, etc.

Most people would be surprised how many functional alcoholics there are too. This thread isn't about some VP popping a gummy at lunchtime. This is about people smoking a joint on the sidewalk, waiting at a crowded bus stop, while driving their car, etc.

It’s not legal to drive while high. It’s also not legal to smoke weed in public. But DC doesn’t enforce any of these laws because it’s DC.

Serious question, how do you prove someone is driving high? Unless you see them take a hit of marijuana behind the wheel. Smelling it over a few people at dinner or finding in the car while they’re driving, it can’t be proven not like BAC or a breathalyzer.

As a DCPS teacher - it is appalling to me that our admin does nothing about the high school kids who come in reeking of pot. And it is heartbreaking trying to teach them.

The reason people will tell you they smoke while driving is they know pot is legal now.

Seriously. Ask them; they will tell you that.

Those kids are under treatment for severe anxiety from all the stress that teachers create.

There’s so much focus on punishing drunk driving (rightfully so). Same needs to be applied to smoking pot while driving/driving while high. Let people smoke it at their home. Otherwise, not okay.

Well, sure. But the people I see blowing pot smoke all over the place don't look like "extremely productive people." There's no law against being a layabout but these are not the people I want my kids to be around.

Seriously? Are these alcohol and tobacco industry bots? Nicotine and alcohol are both extremely addictive, making it difficult or impossible for many people with certain genes to enjoy them "in moderation." It's fine to point out that people ignored the real problems associated with marijuana usage, but that doesn't make smoking or drinking any better for you. They are terrible and continue to kill and impair orders of magnitude more people than marijuana.

I mean, if my cousin had smoked a bunch of pot instead of abusing alcohol, he probably wouldn’t have killed his liver by his 30s. If that kid from my dorm had eaten a bunch of edibles rather than attempting 21 shots (yes, he was dumb), he wouldn't have died either.

I don't drink or smoke myself (losing a cousin to substance abuse will do that to you) but the hand wringing over Marijuana when we sell much more physically harmful substances in the grocery store just baffles me.

I have the same question - is there any way to test “levels” in a person at a particular point in time?

That's true with a lot of substances and they have to rely on failing a roadside test. I worked in a courthouse and saw a successful prosecution for a guy who was driving high from sucking whipped cream cans (you can't blood test that). People are weird.

Exactly. Of my two grandfathers, one had emphysema and spent the last 6-7 years of his life hooked up to an oxygen machine. The other was an alcohol addict and when he had a medical procedure that required him to stop drinking for a short time he nearly died from the withdrawal symptoms. The idea that alcohol or nicotine make up part of any "holy trinity" is just bizarre outside of some weird fantasy of returning to the 1950s (male version of tradwife...wanting to go back to the three martini lunch and smoke three packs a day?)

The uniformed security guard at our leased, federal, office space is constantly stoned out of her damn mind and she reeks of skunk-weed. Thank God she is not armed security.

Not yet anyway.

I don’t think that person is accurate. I’m a lawyer and I don’t know anyone that uses pot with any regularity. The one person I know who does is my brother who is a professional who runs his own business but he’s basically driving that business into the ground. It’s a vicious cycle where he takes gummies because he’s anxious about his company but then doesn’t really have the motivation to figure out how to change the trajectory his business is on. He needs to pivot entirely but the pot is stopping him from doing that. Some level of anxiety is probably evolutionarily helpful.
