At this point why wouldn’t kid want to know? |
None of those dates mean anything for TJ, I have no clue why you think they are relevant. There should be limited to no real disruption to scheduling. Eighth graders should have made their class choices for their base school already. They will have to redo their schedule for TJ if they are accepted. TJ is well aware of that. |
Local private schools have deadlines in early March precisely *because* of the TJ window. They want people locked into non-refundable deposits before they get all of the information that they need to make a decision.
sincerely someone who has worked in private schools |
TJ is a public school so is not beholden to the private school process. I have no idea how many kids choose TJ over private schools, but I would guess that it is a small number of kids. |
Many kids that make it into TJ take extra classes in the summer to allow for more electives in the school year. It matters for summer plans. Base school, one can run out of math classes, for example, so no need to do this. At TJ, you need to get some stuff out of the way during the summer to take full advantage of the course offerings. |
College Decision Day and Ph.D. Decision Day are completely irrelevant. Why do you think those dates are relevant to TJ admission notification dates? You may as well list other random days. Jefferson's birthday is April 13. Tax Day is April 15. National Jelly Bean Day is April 22. Shakespeare's birthday is April 23. |
I don’t. But I am waiting on the TJ decision. And that is the only one left by a mile. The points is that these other institutions do their best to leave you with ample time to plan out your summer (and fall). Again, the initial acceptances are delivered way in advance of these decision days. If you had children spanning many years, you would understand. Many families, including the children themselves, want earlier notifications than late April. Summer classes start in early June. I would rather have the TJ tests administered earlier to be notified earlier. |
“Preview Night” @ TJ is scheduled for next Tuesday from 6 to 8. |
Thank you to above poster |
What does that mean? |
That is Thomas Jefferson University. TJHSST has their preview day August 14. |

[Parent of a current TJ student here] Actually, many of the counselors don't recommend you do this summer before your 9th grade year. They don't recommend taking math in the summer, in order to get "ahead" in math because the quality of learning and the speed of the class aren't good. Summer isn't great for that. But after 9th, 10th etc there are some classes that are good. Just not many for the 8th-9th grade summer. Now taking PE or a grad requirement during summer school, or in order to do full-year band or orchestra, yes a lot of folks do (later, not before high school starts). But there's a good amount of time in the Jr. and Sr. year schedule to take advantage of the curriculum. |
TJ admission application portal now says that an email will be sent out to let people know when they can log into the portal to get results. |

Especially math- that TJ website has posted on lots of different pages to NOT take math in summer- they specifically reference that it is not up to what need for TJ and 2 postings specifically say summer math more tailored to credit recovery than to accelerate- meaning is for kids that failed v those want to get ahead. TJ math is NOT what is taught in rest of FCPS HS. |
Actually it is for TJHSST, inside info. The admission email is expected to be out this Friday. Good luck to all the nervous families out there! (We were in your shoes last year so totally understand.) |
