There should be limited to no real disruption to scheduling. Eighth graders should have made their class choices for their base school already. They will have to redo their schedule for TJ if they are accepted. TJ is well aware of that.
Many kids that make it into TJ take extra classes in the summer to allow for more electives in the school year. It matters for summer plans. Base school, one can run out of math classes, for example, so no need to do this. At TJ, you need to get some stuff out of the way during the summer to take full advantage of the course offerings.
[Parent of a current TJ student here] Actually, many of the counselors don't recommend you do this summer before your 9th grade year. They don't recommend taking math in the summer, in order to get "ahead" in math because the quality of learning and the speed of the class aren't good. Summer isn't great for that. But after 9th, 10th etc there are some classes that are good. Just not many for the 8th-9th grade summer. Now taking PE or a grad requirement during summer school, or in order to do full-year band or orchestra, yes a lot of folks do (later, not before high school starts). But there's a good amount of time in the Jr. and Sr. year schedule to take advantage of the curriculum.
