Bachelor star nearly killed by his rescue “boxer” (it’s clearly a pit bull mix)

Boxers are not known as attack dogs or as having a particularly vicious bite—my guess is that this “rescue” had significant past trauma that was not disclosed or maybe not known by the rescue. I really wish rescues were required to do more extensive testing of dogs, particularly before sending to a family with kids and particularly if the history is unknown.

Actually I just looked at more pictures and it looks to me like a pit - boxer mix. So bite strength may have been greater than an average boxer. But clearly trauma background that was triggered by a pretty normal residential family life issue. Glad his kids were not there and his friends were able to help him get to ER quickly.

Go look up what a Boxer is, what it's descended from, and what it's natural jaw strength is. You don't need to call it a pit mix. Boxers have plenty of jaw strength on their own.

It's like some of you think only pit bulls have strong jaws, and all other dog jaws have finch strength or something

I hate pit bulls, but that dog is definitely a boxer.

It probably will be, which is sad, but I don't think it's fair to say it 'attacked unprovoked'. The story the guy was willing to tell on himself involves several elements that would excite a dog, especially a high-energy working breed. The bites are to his shoes (allegedly) and his forearm(s). That doesn't scream dog attack.

I'm not saying he should keep the dog. At all. That dog needs to be rehomed immediately. People with 3 kids under 10 shouldn't have a dog at all, IMO, unless they're qualified handlers with a lot of experience and no day job. But I don't think you can put 100% responsibility for this incident on the dog.

It's moot. The dog will likely be destroyed anyway, because who wants a dog with a bite history when so many don't have that. How sad.

This is why nobody takes your anti-pit ranting seriously. You just look like a deranged clown.

Sad story. Thank god he didn’t attack the wife or kids. And yes, definitely looks like a boxer.

I think it is very wrong to say it is a pitbull when no where does it say anything other than a boxer. At the end of the day, the dog attacked, it does not matter what breed it is. They did the right thing by giving it away. The dog came from another place whose history is most likely unknown. They only had the dog for 3 months. It sucks but not surprised at all. Poor dog and poor family. Something triggered the dog, what it was, we won’t know. Poor family that did the right thing taking the dog in and then properly rehoming it. Sad the man got attacked but so happy the dog didn’t attack the kids.

It's definitely a boxer and definitely shouldn't be living in a house with kids. The dog should probably be put down, sadly. Not worth the risk of keeping a dog that has violently attacked a human.

Didn’t boxers come from pitbulls further up the line? It makes sense that they would look similar and share traits (aggression).

Boxers aren't usually aggressive. But ANY breed of dog can become aggressive.

They are both terriers.

Can those suggesting crate training explain how it would have prevented this situation? Should he have immediately placed the dog in the crate as soon as he noticed agitation or fear in the dog?

At least be kind to your family, since you can't seem to be kind here.

The pic of the dog with the kid shows it is 100% boxer (not even terribly bred but most likely BYB) and OP is what's wrong when people have a hatred that makes them see what they want to see. There are dangerous pit bulls out there and a bunch of idiots that have taken that and manage to see pit bull in EVERY dog that has bitten. I wonder what the current stat is on misidentified "pit bulls" in attacks. It's ok to admit you were wrong OP. Or you can go ahead and add boxers to your list of dogs to hate.
