Sorry, times have changed. UGA’s acceptance rate is closer to 30% now. The poster saying UGA students don’t have access to research is also living in the past. There is a reason UGA has become highly desired.

There are only 3 or 4 I would say break that rule.

I grew up in NY and spent decades in NY and CT. Trust me, UVA is well known, well regarded and for many more desired than their state schools.

I’m a UVA alum who would like my kid to take a look at UGA. UGA seems to have all the good things that UVA has, minus the stick up its *ss. We haven’t actually visited yet, but I’m intrigued.

That is the overall acceptance rate. UGA OOS is much lower.

Before the last batch of freshman admits who were notified 3/14, UGA’s acceptance rate stood at 32.9%.

UGA aims for an 80/20 in-state/OOS split.

32.9% was the final acceptance rate, after RD was released. They don’t calculate the OOS acceptance rate apparently but it must be low with the 80/20 split.

Setting and size are significant factors.

Athens and Charlottesville are both fun college towns (and there's LOTS to do, ignore the pp who said otherwise), but Athens is a bit more of a headache to get to/from.

For engineering and STEM, UGA is stronger. For pre-med and some other fields, UVA is stronger. Both are good schools but it really depends on what your kid wants to study.

This is the real differentiator. The difference in prestige outside of DCUM isn't that significant to make an impact. I also grew up in NY and knew no one who went to or sent their kids to UVA or UGA. It really is more regional. We aren't talking about Harvard vs. some other school that is lower ranked, but I'm not going to name b/c I don't want to be insulting to people.

I did too and you are correct. I have to admit, I will feel a little sheepish when I tell my NY friends that my kid will be going to UGA, which is likely, whereas I wouldn't have that feeling were he going to UVA, where he didn't get in.

I agree. I just added it as a counterpoint to the poster from NY who said UVA was well-known there. It wasn't in my area. It's all irrelevant now, though, with so many kids traveling farther for their schools.

Tell your friends that UGA’s current level of competitiveness is probably harder than UVA was when they would have applied.
