UGA or UVA

Does anyone have experience with both UGA and UVA? Is there a difference in the student body vibe?

Agreed. My student loved them both. Very similar.

I have two at UGA and relatives at UVA. I think they are similar in that they both have a lot of Greek activity, both draw heavily from their in-state populations, small towns with not much to do apart from the college. I have heard of oos kids having a little trouble finding their people at both schools. The ones I know at UVA and UGA did not have that trouble and are very happy.

I love UGA, but I would have strongly encouraged them to go to UVA if that had been an option. UGA is probably cheaper though - mine had scholarships that brought their freshman year to about $33K per year despite being oos.

PP is right - having a great football team has really added to the fun environment.

If they are in -state UVA and wanting to try something new, I understand UGA. Mine were accepted to UT Austin and chose UGA and no one regrets anything.

What are they going to study? Have you visited it both?

We have friends with boy/girl twins -- the son is at UGA and the daughter at UVA. I think they are happy with the fit for each of the kids.

REM v Dave Matthews

UVA is less than half the size of UGA. Classes would be a bit smaller with more access to professors, research, etc.

UGA has very little access to research. I can definitely vouch for that.

UVA is far more prestigious, if that matters to you.

This is tricky. UVA is ranked higher on USNWR and is more "coveted" in the DC area for those who want to remain in the Mid-Atlantic. It's a good school and a good price for VA kids. UGA has more national name recognition and a better alumni network in the south. It is also a well-respected school and can often cost about the same as VA schools if your kid gets the scholarship that covers half the difference between in and out of state. The ranking alone isn't enough reason to choose one over the other.

UGA is more nationally recognized than UVA in what??? Football, I guess, but not academically.

In terms of academic prestige, it's normal for U of State schools to be much more recognized regionally than nationally. Of course UVA is more desired in VA or MD than in NY or CA.
There are only 3 or 4 I would say break that rule.

Yeah maybe consider what part of the country they want to live in post graduation. Both are very well known and respected in their region.
