The End of Foreign Aid

I highly doubt it applies to the billions and billions of dollars we send to Israel. For some strange reason, we as Americans must support Israel unconditionally.

I am one of the people impacted. Me and my 100 colleagues in the US, and hundreds across the world. It is utter chaos right not with conflicting directions from USAID, some of it unclear if it is even legal. How can you be told on the 25th that no costs after the 24th will be reimbursed?

So anyway, we are in the process of figuring out how to lay off most of those 100s of people, because we don’t have some big bank account with three months of payroll it in we can lend the government while they do their review. It’s unclear if they will pay us eventually, though the lawyers sure are going to be making a fortune as they argue about it.

I’m in Maryland and there are thousands of us doing similar work, in the similar boat, who live in Maryland and will potentially be out of work as soon as we can be given our 30 day notice. My organization will go from hundreds of people around the world to maybe a dozen. I hope the organization survives, as it does critical work. My job unfortunately is one that has no funding as of Friday, so I’ll be out there hunting for a job with all the rest of the laid off aid workers.

It doesn’t. Aid to Israel, Egypt, and food aid were exempted.

The aid that has been halted is not going to governments, PP. Mostly it goes to American NGOs, universities and companies that then do things like distribute Malaria bednets or HIV medicine or train midwives how to prevent fistula when 12 year old girls give birth.

Qanon has entered the room. You know, if I was going to try to get a bunch of good-hearted people to do what I wanted, I'd be talking up the trafficking of kids as the root of all I didn't like. Sex trafficking is really a peripheral issue - it doesn't actually happen that often, has no effect on your life but it sure gets talked about a lot. Wonder why.

I’m sorry to hear that, PP. I assume you are Guatemalan? I don’t know that I would describe that real and horrific abuse as an indictment of NGOs in general. There were for profit adoption agencies in the mix, and religious organizations, as well as governments turning a blind eye. There are evil or self serving people in every walk of life. People working in NGOs are not heroes or saints, just people doing jobs for organizations that don’t take profits.
