Do you put your seat belt on in an Uber/Lyft?

When we moved to our current house in NoVA about a decade ago, I was surprised to hear at a party hosted by neighbors that most people didn't wear seatbelts at all. It was a point of discussion because our local jurisdiction had cracked down on seatbelt violations, and several of our neighbors had received tickets. I was frankly shocked. It was the 2010s - who doesn't wear a seatbelt?

I always wear a seatbelt - car, Uber, taxi, whatever. When I was in early elementary school my dad was in a serious car accident, and survived because he was wearing a seatbelt (this was the 70s, and at the time a lot of people didn't wear them). I can't imagine not wearing one.

Always…and I bring a booster if riding with my kid.

Yes. Being in the backseat during a minor car accident when I was 17 cured me of any impulse not to use a seat belt.

Of course. It being a Lyft/Taxi doesn't change what physically happens in an accident.

I always do, but I know people don't especially if it's 3 across in the back. When I was younger and taking cabs around DC for work, none of my coworkers wore them.

If the car rolls every person becomes a over 100 pound unctrolled weight that can smash into everyone else in the back. If the car comes to a very sudden stop, they also can become a projectile flying forward into the people in the front seat.

I explained this to my MIL when I insisted she buckle up in the back seat with my kid (she wanted to sit next to him). An unbuckled passenger isn't just a risk to themselves.

I’m 37 and was raised to wear a seatbelt every time I am riding in or driving a car, with no exceptions. Why wouldn’t you wear a seatbelt? It’s 2025 and the dangers of not doing so are well-known.

The laws of physics are not optional.

Exactly. I also don't smoke in an Uber. I'm surprised this is even a question.

For those that don't buckle up, do it for the driver. If you get in a crash, you'll turn into a missile and can injure or kill the driver.

If I don't have a seatbelt on, as a driver or a passenger, I feel somewhat "naked" and immediately put it on. How hard is it to do?

Yes, I wear seat belts in every car I’m. Why wouldn’t I in an Uber?

If I was an Uber driver, I would 100% give you a lower rating for not buckling up. Drivers can be ticketed for having passengers who aren’t weering seat belts and who knows what kind of problem it could cause with insurance.

Always. Putting on your seatbelt should be habit.

Most Uber drivers aren't dumb enough to buy new cars that depreciate faster than Uber pays them.

Lower rating? Car doesn't move until the seatbelt is buckled. Belligerent riders get evicted. Security camera footage gets rider banned from app.
