Does demonstrated interest help for Lehigh? Visiting / taking a tour and signing up for (and opening) emails? What else for DI?

Yes.

And the best form of DI is applying to a college ED.

I think the best strategy for target schools that 'yield protect' is to 1) show them love, 2) apply EA (early but non binding if it's an option), and 3) write strong, carefully crafted essays that show you've researched and really know what the school offers and tell them how you will engage and take advantage of the resources and opportunities there. I think a lot of kids submit generic essays where they cut and paste old essays, change 1 or 2 facts - and it may not show genuine interest in the school. Just my anecdotal experience...

Was worried about this too at EA schools. DC really liked both and if in the end they were the only acceptances, DC would have been happy to attend either. That said they were safeties by GPA/SAT and SCOIR. But as people say they were not safeties if you just went by admit percent, one was a T30 National LAC and the other a T100 National University.
So to try to prove DC’s genuine interest they did whatever they could. Unfortunately we couldn’t afford to visit in person so did everything offered online and all virtual events. DC also really tried to make strong case in the why us essays. Maybe that was enough as DC was admitted to both. Advice is don’t phone in applications to these schools. Give them as much time and effort as you would ED application. I also think your DC has to genuinely want these schools. That will come across in the essay. Don’t just pick highest ranked schools that happen to offer EA with no regard to if they fit DC and their interests.

Conn College is one out college office warns about. Don’t apply without demonstrating interest.

That doesn’t scream yield protection. Just very different competitive schools

From personal experience:
Case Western

My kid didn’t do anything but apply EA and got into Case with strong merit offered ($40.5k)

Wake does not yield protect. I know more than one kid admitted to Wake RD currently at an Ivy.

No evidence at all. It’s surprising their kid ingot into Hopkins, Pomona, and Georgetown. Sounds like they didn’t know what they wanted and it made for a messy application.
