Every model is predicting enough snow to make commuting unsafe. Why make everyone wait until 4:30 am to cancel? If for some reason every model is wrong then we've used up one of the snow days. If not we've given everyone notice to make plans and not start commuting during unsafe conditions. |
When I lived in Massachusetts, NY, and NJ, they all did the same thing. With modern technology we know how much snow is expected, the probability of that amount of accumulation, and the time it takes to clear it. But it will never not blow my mind that someone not in charge of thousands of people’s commute complains on the internet about a decision made 12 hours too early for them. Especially in DC where they have often been open when everyone else around is closed. |
Does anyone know how make up days for snow days work? Last year I remember potential makeup days were tacked on to the end of the published calendar…but I can’t remember if those days were actually used? |
The last couple of years, I feel like they haven’t used the tacked on snow days, despite having canceled school for snow. I don’t really care either way, but I hope they make a decision soon. |
The consensus on this storm was reached days ago by forecasters, and they knew that both the timing and the amount of snow would make things treacherous. DCPS wasn't simply guessing here. DCPS, in fact, usually waits until morning. You sound like you have no idea what you're talking about and just want to complain. |
See you Wednesday 😁 |
I believe that in the past they have taken back a teacher conference day for instruction. Last year, I think they either sought a waiver to avoid having to have the additional days or they figured out some way to calculate the 180 days so as to not require a waiver. But it wasn’t communicated clearly, nor was it communicated early. If none of these solutions are used, school will end on Friday, June 20 (after a day off for Juneteenth). But no one will go. And if we have another snow day, it will end on Monday, June 23. And no one will go. |
okay, so it looks like school will be canceled on Tuesday? |
Do we think it’ll be a 2 hour delay or no school tomorrow? |
There is supposed to be an additional inch or two in the late afternoon. While this ensures that MCPS and FCPS will be closed tomorrow, I'm not sure of DCPS' capacity for snow removal vs their mission of keeping schools open and feeding kids. There will at the very least be a delay on Tuesday, if not a closure. |
Are the roads unsafe? Just because there's snow on the road doesnt mean it's dangerous. If that was the case, kids in much of the country would miss months of school. |
Welcome to DC. If the forecast says we're getting 12 inches of snow, you can expect three. |
Arghhh.
|
I think we will have a cancellation tomorrow and possibly a delay Wednesday. My kids school has a half day Wed so not sure what they will do with that. |
The gyms are open and the schools are closed. Reminds me of the pandemic. |
