If you want something that's going to be used for a while, don't bring clothes. They're in and out of sizes in a matter of weeks at that age.

If you do buy clothes, buy something that says 9 months or 6-9 months. If you buy something that says 6 months it often really means (3-6) and many 5 month olds are out of those sizes or about to be (my kid was 60th percentile in both) and would have been moving into 9s at that age.

+1 As a mom of two little ones, I would have loved this. Favorite swimsuit brand is Rufflebutts and they are often on-sale. Would pair the swimsuit with one of their hats and maybe a pair of sandals and/or sunglasses and you're good to go.

I agree to stay away from clothes. And if you do buy up, don’t be season-specific unless you are sure of sizing. Unlike the PP, both my kids are tiny. My 13-month-old is still in size 6-9 months, so when people buy us larger sizes, they are invariably for the wrong season by the time they fit. I also wouldn’t buy clothes unless you know the person’s taste well.

At 5-6 months most kids are beginning to eat solids and might even be teething. Maybe give something related to feeding or a teether.

Books or a toy or puzzle to grow into.

Wipe warmer. This is time of the year, especially, a cold, wet wipe on a baby bottom is shocking, to say the least.

Freddie the Firefly and a book you loved as a kid.

Below is a gift box URL which suggests the formula is onesies + board book + teether + tiny shoes. It's interesting to look at. However, I agree clothing is a big risk. I used to buy sizes 12-18 all season onesies if I felt moved to buy clothing. And to give gift receipts. I'd go with Macy's or Janie and Jack if it has local storefronts.

I agree more with board books than anything else. 5 of them can be $40-$50 at retail.

We had "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" book and stuffie merch (that's what I was looking for when I found the URL for the gift box store). Eric Carle board books are quite nice. Two other titles are "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and "The Tiny Seed".

I also liked the pair of "I Love My Mommy Because" and "I Love My Daddy Because" by Laurel Porter Gaylord. (Making assumptions that these apply to your giftee.) These books sound treacly but they are actually mostly about animal behavior and parenting.

Two books that my family found funny were "No, No, Yes, Yes" and "Quiet Loud" by Leslie Patricelli.

I'm also just remembering that I loved Bumkins Superbibs (not the junior bib or sleeved bib). I didn't like regular fabric bibs because they never came clean. But Superbibs did, so I bought multiples and used to give them as gifts. Bumkins is on Amazon.

One final thought...because Sophie the Giraffe teether is all natural, she doesn't last as a souvenir of babyhood. She gets stiff and crumbly and has to be trashed. I discovered this when ours was about 10 years old.

Someone (I still don't know who!) sent us a version of this when my son was a baby and it was his favorite thing:

The little stuffies that are an animal head with a soft, square, fabric attached were also both favorites for both my kids (they took them everywhere for years and still have them as tweens). This kind of thing:

Neither of those are high end or particularly stylish, but they were what my kids really loved. Someone also gave us a Zubels rattle which my daughter loved--but it looks like they've changed their products around a lot since then. But maybe something from their site would work?

I agree to stay away from clothes--we had so many clothes already and sizing is hard. I also love the board book idea, except they may also already have the popular ones.

The Sophie Teether you also have to watch around moisture or it gets moldy.

I do laugh a bit. The more you dress up your kid it feels like the higher chances they will have a giant blow out immediately.
