The little stuffies that are an animal head with a soft, square, fabric attached were also both favorites for both my kids (they took them everywhere for years and still have them as tweens).  This kind of thing:

Neither of those are high end or particularly stylish, but they were what my kids really loved. Someone also gave us a Zubels rattle which my daughter loved--but it looks like they've changed their products around a lot since then. But maybe something from their site would work?

I agree to stay away from clothes--we had so many clothes already and sizing is hard. I also love the board book idea, except they may also already have the popular ones.[/quote]
