We need more shows like the Waltons

I used to love hearing the theme song of Little House. I don't know why. It was interesting to see what life was like on the prairie. And of course Michael Landon was so attractive. I remembered watching him in "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" on a CBS afternoon movie.

No we do not. Never

You have no brain cells?

Should we bring back little house on the prairie too?

What is wrong with you?

[/quote]

Such a rude person like yourself could have benefited from more good-natured TV.

+1 Seriously! Too many shows today lack kindness and quality family life. Instead, they're filled with sexual innuendos, violence, and cutting humor. There needs to be a balance. Our kids aren't getting it.

The thing is, kids aren't watching TV anyway. Rounding them up to watch The Waltons would feel like punishment to them. I could see it being effective if you start them off young before they're hooked on tablets and YouTube.. When DD was really young she decided she liked to watch Father Knows Best. The furnishings and clothes fascinated her and she thought Kitty was fancy.

PP. Sorry, I should have said Kitten.

I remember the theme song to Little House too! I would get so excited - Mondays at 8pm. Loved that show.

I remember when the daughter cousin Mary Ellen Ingalls went blind. Those episodes were genuinely frightening. Didn't she wake up screaming?

Yo7 hi conflated two characters.

Mary Ellen was the eldest daughter on The Waltons

Mary Ingalls was the older sister of Laura Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie. She became blind due to scarlet fever.

I had Scarlett fever in 4th grade in the 1970s. My mom made a big deal about it. That show frightened me.

And the blonde girl with the pigtails was so mean.

Did your parents not believe in antibiotics? Scarlet fever is just strep so has not been a big problem since antibiotics became widely available after WW2. And although it can kill you bu infecting your heart (what happened to Beth in Little Women) it doesn’t make you go blind. Wilder used scarlet fever in the book because people had heard of scarlet fever but it was almost certainly encephalitis that made her sister go blind.

I had scarlet fever as well. I got sick a lot as a kid and I really wanted to go to this birthday party so I hid that I was sick with strep throat. Eventually my mom saw the rash and got antibiotics immediately.

Back to the topic of this thread I’ll add The Durrells in Corfu. I loved the Waltons as a kid. The author, Earl Hamner Jr., based it on his family in Schuyler, Va., just south of Charlottesville. There’s a Waltons museum there and even a B&B that’s similar to the Walton’s house.

Yeah. This is the real problem. There are some wholesome shows available but my kids would much rather play games with their friends online anyway.
But I agree all creatures great and small is great. There are also some great non fiction ones — I like behind the scenes at disney animal kingdom — the animal caretakers and vets are all such kind, caring people. And similarly I really liked Dr Dee Alaskan Vet — ahe was genuinely nice and kind to all the humans and animals she encountered.

Km’s convenience is a sitcom with a really good loving family. I also liked Gentefied but there’s definitely swearing and some drug use in that one (but even Albert ingalls had a drug problem on little house so…). There’s also older shows like family Ties that might resonate with your kids.

I got it too, in the 80's. I was immune to the antibiotics so they were completely ineffective at treatment and it progressed.

Absolutely!

The books and the television series.

The Little House on the Prairie books are beautifully written, timeless classics that were cancelled by people who probably never read them.

They should be in every classroom and Laura Ingalls Wilder should be covered in every elementary school.
