Ozempic is for diabetics and pre-diabetics. Wegovy is the same drug for weight loss. For Wegovy you need to have an obese BMI, or an overweight BMI plus some other issue. Ask your GP to order bloodwork that checks your blood sugar, blood fats, etc. Although your GP can prescribe, many are reluctant to. If that's the case, you should make an appointment with a medical weight loss clinic, such as Inova. There is typically a wait so in the meanwhile you can pay one of the online services to hook you up with a doctor that pretty much just does these prescriptions. You can go to your health insurance website to look up your insurance copay for the meds. |
Around $1k a month, but it isn’t prescribed by anyone for weight loss. It is a diabetes drug. It also doesn’t cause weight loss for about 15% of users. Some gain weight in it. |
I don’t know anyone who has gained weight on it. I do know many people stop it because of the side effects (like nausea). Places like Eden will prescribe for $2-300/month although you can stretch the bottle out longer than one month. |
I pay out of pocket (even though PCP prescribed it for me). I pay about $100 a month for a compound. |
Expected weight loss on Wegovy is between 1/2 and 1 pound per week.
I have been on it for about 8 months now, and I've lost 39 pounds. So I've lost a little under one pound a week. But much of it was the first month -- I think I lost 12 pounds the first month. So it has been slower since. |
I am at about month 8 on a dose of 1 (I have had a lot of side effects so was on 05 for about 6 months) and this is happening for me too. I am starting to crave food a lot again. I have at least another 30 pounds to get to a normal BMI. |
Wegovy prescribed by my GP, and insurance covers it, I pay nothing. Agree about weight loss, it truly varies per perspn |
Thanks for this explanation. Looks like Wegovy would be better for me then! So it’s covered by insurance if you are obese? |
I am in the same boat as your husband and have been on Wegovy since mid June. My doctor is bumping me to 2.4 and said I can expect to lose another 10 lbs. another 10 lbs would put me straddling the line of obese and overweight. at that point, if I stall out, I’m still 30 lbs away from goal weight, that could be done with a different drug OR weight loss surgery (ugh). |
Lol. Sorry to laugh, but lately this has been the subject of more chatter on the internet than just about anything else for years. At least with folks talking about weight loss. That's because most insurance plans have stopped covering it for 2025 because the demand and cost were bankrupting them. What is probably the most common insurance around the DMV -- FEP BCBS -- dropped it from Tier 2 to Tier 3 drug on the formulary, which means 50% coinsurance which means about $700 out-of-pocket in the coming year for those of us on it. Which everyone is screaming about, but they actually should count their lucky stars that coverage wasn't dropped altogether as it has been on most private insurance plans. YMMV depending on your plan. |
You are only supposed to be able to get a prescription if you are obese. What your insurance covers varies with your plan. |
20 lbs in about a year |
My private insurance covers Ozempic and moujarno and I’m not obese |
Wegovy is like the name brand. Most people who pay out of pocket get compounded semi-glutide. |
