One conservative position I agree with

Poor people dont need to be punished. If you want to go after sugar, go after Starbucks as well but you won't because the poor dont use food stamps for it

I honestly don’t understand the Democratic position here.

To recap, soda and junk food taxes are a standard and important Democratic policy to promote public health.

However, preventing SNAP from being used for soda and junk food is punishment for poor people.

People need to get their stories straight.

You straighten yourself. LBH, you don't care about poor peoples' health.

Why don't you find something else a bit more worthwhile to focus on. "The poors" drinking soda with SNAP benefits isn't something reasonable people are concerned about.

Further, as long as we are making lists about what I don't want subsidized, we can do away with farm, oil, corp subsidies. You benefit from all those things, despite it being sort of a bit of socialism.

Soda us actually pretty expensive now, but pre Covid19 was a very inexpensive beverage and a way to feel a bit full.

My disabled family member gets $58 dollars a month in SNAP.

Yet despicable people like OP have an AX to grind over soda.

We shouldn’t be buying Coca Cola for welfare recipients.

Reminder: wasn't that long ago that conservatives got all kinds of outraged about the suggestion that people should eat less junk food and corn-syrup-laden sodas. And Sarah Palin defiantly hoisted a 64 ounce big gulp of Coca Cola to thunderous applause at CPAC.

It's so weird that Republicans have no historical knowledge or memory of what they believed and stood for just a few years ago.

Maybe because republicans don’t actually stand for anything. At all.

I was a teenage socialist when that happened and I'm a 30-something Republican now. Why am I supposed to justify the party's ancient history?

It's so weird Democrats seceeded from the Union over slavery. They have no historical knowledge or memory of what they believed.

Millions of Mormons can vouch that it is possible to "work" without caffeine.

This isn't the gotcha you think it is. The Word of Wisdom is against hot drinks, not caffeine. Do you know how many Mormon mommies subsist on diet cokes and energy drinks? There is a reason Swig is so popular in Utah.

As someone who isn’t a Mormon but knows a lot of Mormons, my god you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Caffeine free Diet Coke comes in a brown can and it’s a staple for all Mormon families.

If sodas are so bad, why not ban them for everyone? Why only welfare recipients?

Are you a complete idiot? There is a difference between banning something and not using tax dollars to pay for it.

Cut the ag subsidies. Then there won’t be excess corn grown that the federal government has to supply a market for.

But this is not a conservative idea.

I think cutting ag subsidies has broad support...except for the politicians who need to bring home a "win" in their rural districts to get re-elected.

But when China owns all the farmland in the US maybe it won't be such a win anymore?

The felon loves his ag subsidies, which he gave them right after he tanked the sector. Let’s see if it has broad support.

They can buy coffee.
It doesn't cost $6.

Uhhh that CPAC conference was 2013. Just 11 years ago. Not even remotely ancient history or warranting a comparison to what Republicans and Democrats were many lifetimes ago in 1865.

You present a perfect example of why so many other Americans are baffled at current Republicans' complete lack of consistency and abandonment of principles.

Why weren’t you screaming like this at Michelle Obama and her “attack on the poors”? Do you people ever make sense?

Nobody was banning coca cola. Just suggesting that kids should have healthier things to eat and drink in public schools. The right wing absolutely lost their shit over it.

At that time, Democrats were banning chicken nuggets in school lunchrooms across the country and imposing onerous taxes on sodas.

What’s next? Are you going to start calling the ban on menthol cigarettes racist now that the FDA is under Trump.
