Anyone else quitting news entirely ?

Anonymous
I've cut way way way back. Used to listen to NPR all day and political podcasts another 2 hours or so per day. Now it's just NPR first thing in the morning and maybe one hour of podcasts.

I still go on the Bulwark subreddit and obv am still here on DCUM. But I have to disengage at least a little, at least for now, or I will lose my mind.

I'm on twitter still (a little bit) but since so many people left for b-sky it's a lot quieter, so I appreciate that.

Like PP said - I can't listen to his voice. It's what sets off a whole set of physical and emotional reactions, as much as the news itself. So, trying to practice some self-care. If we don't take care of ourselves, we can't care for anyone else.

Four years. We have to get through four years.

These and similar sources aren't without bias. Many of these channels and podcasts aren't any different from so called mainstream media, they simply sell an image to the consumer as being underground with no spin, and at the end of the day they are selling something as well and lining their pockets
Cenk Kadir Uygur of TYT is already cozying up to Elon Musk.

I'm not sure avoiding news all together is the way to go.

Seek multiple sources and research, You have to look at it as a research and fact finding mission take your emotions out of it.

It won’t matter we are headed to state news

Nope!
if anything, I am getting news from a greater variety of sources now. If you and other people feel blindsided by the election and all the stuff that’s happening, it’s because you were getting your news from too narrow a source before and way too biased.
I think the biggest emblem of everything that is wrong with our country is this woman named Gabrielle Blair, a Mormon influencer who runs a blog called design, mom, who ostracizes and calls for her readers to ostracize anybody who supported Trump. This is exactly what has pushed people toward him and created the divide in our country that’s a rot from the inside out. I am arming myself with information and yet I find that the most depressed about the election in my circle are the ones that keep repeating this ridiculous line “now I know how much this country really hates women” which is such a joke. Time to grow up!

We're not "blindsided" because we can't believe that he won - he won before, so we know that's possible, and all the polling said that it was going to be really close again this time. We're tuning out because he is THAT bad, but he won - and it's pretty unbearable. He's a rapist felon who is going to burn everything down, and we were helpless to stop it and are helpless to stop it from being as bad as it's going to be.

I saw a tweet before the election that hit me right in the heart - it was along the lines of, the human body was not meant to withstand three Trump election cycles. Well now it's three Trump election cycles and two Trump presidencies. And you will excuse me if I don't want to stay glued to his every outrageous, shocking, disgusting move once again. People knew exactly who he was, and they chose him again - and no, I do not need to follow every second of this now as if me paying attention will somehow influence things one way or another.

Yep. I listen to WTOP, which gives me the headlines so I know if there has been anything major, but otherwise I’m ignoring the dumpster fire.

Oh I’m don’t avoid it because of trump.

I just find it a waste of time. 99% of what will affect me is local, in my house, and in my family.

Reading about ukrain helps none of that. I literally don’t care enough to disturb my peace. I was in an abusive marriage and have struggled mightily with PTSD. Freeing myself from being bombarded by negativity from every corner of he world was the best thing I ever did for my mental health.

No. I don't choose to be ignorant just because I don't like election results.

I’ve never listened to a ton of news because it’s stupid and unhealthy.

You don’t need to get your information from news and you don’t need hours of news.

I listen to 30 minutes in the am and 30 in the pm.

Get the highlights and will look into anything that’s important.

I don’t need a talking head to explain tarrifs. I understand economics. I don’t have to hear about Israel and Palestine I’ve been hearing about it since I was born.

Read an economics book.
Read pew research.
Read actual Supreme Court cases.
Go to fbi statistics if you want to see crime trends.
Read a book on history because it repeats itself you can tell the future.

I feel like completely disengaging is irresponsible. I never “watch” the news, but I read a little bit from a wide variety of sources (& listen to NPR).

Everything is biased one way or another, at least a little, and I feel it’s very important to read sources from both sides of the political spectrum— read things with which you disagree so you see what news (or “news”) the other half of the country is reading.

I will say, though, that after reading obsessively for about a week after the election, I’ve made a conscious effort to cut back and focus more on my personal life.

I quit network news years ago because of all the pharm ads. I read the headlines on Real Clear Politics which gives balanced coverage. For those who want to "quit news," it's time to open your worldview to understand the mass appeal of the message voters delivered. There has been a massive repudiation of progressives.

“neutral” doing a lot of work there

The YoungTurks and Commentary Magazine do have a point of view (mostly opposite), but neither liked their presidential candidate for their party. Breaking Points has a progressive and libertarian while 2WAY has a neutral moderator and a real conservative and real Democrat and lots of audience participation. You hear both sides without them screaming at each other. It is much healthier that living in a political silo.

No. I still torture myself and read it. I honestly can’t imagine myself ever quitting - but I’m very good at compartmentalizing. It doesn’t ruin my mood or day, thankfully.

I agree that totally stopping news seems irresponsible.

I don't watch cable news at all -- it's toxic. I subscribe to the Post and read that daily and I listen to a variety of podcasts that are newsy or news commentary but stay away from anything that is pure opinion or just preaching to the choir. I like podcasts where there is some debate and where they go deep into facts. I like Puck as a political news source and I also will check out pieces at WSJ and the NYT and a few longform magazines (the Economist, Mother Jones, New Yorker, the Atlantic). I also look at the National Review even though I don't like their bent -- I want to see what they are saying.

I also work to look at news that is not Trump or politics related. I've read a lot about the escalation in Ukraine recently and am using a lot of international sources. The Post had an interesting article about a trans athlete in college womens volleyball and how other teams are responding -- it was really well reported and didn't take a side. I stay informed on Israel/Gaza.

It doesn't have to be your whole day and it doesn't have to be engaging in emotional opinion on the news. I do get weary of Trump transition news and I will shut that off sometimes because it's part of his whole approach to media -- flood the zone with so many announcements and so much commentary that it all blurs together. He'll probably go back to the constant press conferences and leaks when he takes office too. I don't feel the need to consume all of that. But that's not the only news in the world.
