Look, a while back, a professional basketball player made a comment about Cleveland that I think explains why people in the 21st century don’t hold Wisco in nearly the same high regard that you appear to … He said, “I never heard anyone say I’m going to Cleveland on vacation”. https://youtu.be/XUxWYZrLUHo?feature=shared Who is sending their kid to Madison, Wisconsin over these schools? UCLA Berkeley Michigan UVA Texas UNC Florida Washington UGA If the top ranked school was actually an outpost on the moon, would you send your kid there? |
Madison is in eastern WI, not western |
No, it is “south central” Wisconsin. That’s what the locals say.
|
| This is the stupidest thread I have seen in a long time. Flying to Madison, Milwaukee, or Chicago are all reasonable options. I’d go into more detail but just look it up yourself. |
| At least two (and most days three) direct flights a day from DCA to Madison |
| Troll post from Wisconsin booster. |
Oh, please, get a grip. |
| I thought this thread would be about JMU. |
| There are direct flights to Madison from DCA. |
Noah went to Florida and no one vacations in Gainesville either. And college isn’t a vacation. |
True, but it’s not a prison sentence in a desolate, wintry gulag either. I care about my kid’s college experience, which goes FAR beyond the classroom. |
No no idiot you get a grip! There is mass denialism especially among the UVA boosters in the DC area about just how bad UVA is. You’re not contributing to society or to academia if you have horrible graduate schools. In 100 years, people will look at Wisconsin and Berkeley and Texas and all the other schools who invest in their graduate schools as the true leaders of higher education. UVA has to get over this fetish for investment banking and big law and focus on the future, like stem. Washington/Florida and those types of schools need to focus on educating the whole person and get top humanities and stem like Wisconsin has. |
‘sconsin unleashed! |
Here’s a take. You’re right that Wisconsin is a better university than Virginia. But not for getting a job. The German model of research universities which Wisconsin conforms to is wrong. That’s because there is no such thing as “truth” and trying to find truth in academia is foolish. Just look at physics or philosophy nowadays…. UVA has one of the best business and law schools. You don’t need “top faculty” for the best law or business school, all you need is selective admission and elite employer reputation. I can’t think of two categories antithetical to Wisconsin’s brand. Again, there is no doubt Wisconsin’s PHD students are, as a whole, leagues more intelligent and qualified than a UVA student. But how are they gonna get a job?? That’s all that’s gonna matter at the end of day, and academia is one of the worst job markets out there. I’ve met a lot of well off Wisconsin alumni, but they are almost always from undergrad, which Wiscy is just good but not great at. Many of them went to top professional schools after Wisconsin, using the academic reputation as a booster. |
Hell yeah! That sounds awesome. A once in a lifetime opportunity for sure. |
