Milwaukee is by far the smallest city in the Midwest. Wisconsin in the smallest Great Lakes state by over a million people. Yet it has the second best state university…

UI-UC in the immediate region, and then UCLA, Berkeley, UVA, Texas, UNC, Florida, Washington and probably UGA, too. But “second” after all of them, sure.

Seriously I’m sick to death of these dumb bad take on state universities. Look at the states you’ve listed, they have double, triple, and even quintuple the amount of people that Wisconsin has. This naturally makes them more competitive. BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE BETTER. Look at the department ranks for each and compare them to Wisconsin. Not even close. History, chemistry, English, history, math, economics, Wisco is better than all these schools.

A school like Florida does no important research, contributes nothing to society, and is only elevated by having 20 MILLION more people than Wisconsin is. Can you do math??

When you tire of the tantrum and you’re ready to join the rest of us in the 21st century, we’ll be here.

This is the 21st century, it has better department NOW. I don’t get why employers and prospective students just ignore this. UW has such a mid reputation now, probably because it’s run by Wisconsinites who don’t care about prestige or giving their students good paying jobs. OOS students pay good money to go to this school, and being known as “Michigan’s backup” isn’t good enough. Why does UW always have the most incompetent administration.

Look, a while back, a professional basketball player made a comment about Cleveland that I think explains why people in the 21st century don’t hold Wisco in nearly the same high regard that you appear to …

He said, “I never heard anyone say I’m going to Cleveland on vacation”.

Who is sending their kid to Madison, Wisconsin over these schools?

UCLA
Berkeley
Michigan
UVA
Texas
UNC
Florida
Washington
UGA

If the top ranked school was actually an outpost on the moon, would you send your kid there?

Noah went to Florida and no one vacations in Gainesville either. And college isn’t a vacation.

I went to Cleveland on vacation…Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, boat tours, theatres, stadium… it was great! But then again, my kid wants to go to Madison, so… Not totally crazy UVA #1 choice but I do not think he will get in!

If Madison is in the middle of nowhere, so is UVA and Michigan. Man, some of you just blow the stereotype that people in the DC area are smart.

Ann Arbor and Charlottesville are in eastern time and makes them more prestigious. Both city NYC and their ultimate feeder city, which is by far the most prestigious city where every college graduate wants to go.

Wi outside of Milwaukee is "very white"

Signed,

Parent of A kid who attended college in Milwaukee and took a job in Madison area

First thing they noticed was the extreme lack of diversity (grew up in Md/HoCo and then west coast)

WTF are you talking about? Milwaukee is majority minority.

Reading comprehension is not your strong point, right?

yup! You can literally drive from Madison to Milwaukee in about 75 mins---I know my kid who graduated college in Milwaukee lives in Madison now. And most friends from college are still in MKE---You can make it in less than 75 mins if there are no cops out patrolling

What? Madison is a city of about 200K people, or maybe more. Top Chef just did a season there.

200k isn’t that much. But you’re not a city if you’re surrounded by a massively depopulated area like rural western Wisconsin. Ditto for northern New Hampshire. Wisconsin/Minnesota/North Dakota are roughly in the same league of depopulated “Alabama of the North”states.

Great attitude for losing a presidential election.

Madison is like a small town though. Flights there are expensive and not often direct. I went there once for a work trip. I arrived at 8 pm on a Sunday and nothing was open for dinner.

I’m telling you that’s how most people feel about Wisconsin. The bad perception of Wisconsin vs Michigan as states is much greater than the perception of the two state flagships. Madison and Michigan are seen as national universities, but if you live in Wisconsin you’re a drunk. On the other hand, if you live in Michigan there is no negative stereotype; in fact Ann Arbor residents are considered quite prestigious.

Weird because my kid goes there and I fly direct all the time out of DCA. And I was there last Sunday and had dinner reservations at 8:30, and there were ones available after that.

UW Madison is 15 min. from the airport. Madison is the capital of the state. It's not "urban" the way that NYU or BU is. I have other children that attend colleges in cities that are more vibrant, but it's definitely not rural. or in the middle of nowhere. 15 minutes from an airport is great - makes move in/out and coming home for breaks much easier. Which was one minus in the UGA column when that was on the table.

I have lived in several states & foreign countries, but have spent most of my life in the Detroit area, which I like very much. It is in general uncrowded, sane, & unpretentious (180 degrees opposite from DMV, NYC, SOCAL). But my coastal friends think I am insane for living in such a cold and unglamorous place.

Yes, Cheeseheads DO have a rep for drinking enormous amounts of beer. But since when is that a BAD thing?

Yes, their are direct flights, amd, they cost a fortune compared to flying into Milwaukee and renting a car for the drive. Even with the cost of a rental, it's cheaper to fly into Milwaukee

The Delta non-stop from DCA, or else through Detroit. The drive isn't that bad either.

Other than Michigan, I would go to UW over any of those other schools.

I will say with all these responses on how Madison is in the "middle of nowhere", I understand why Midwesterners/non-coast people might think we Left and Right coast people are out of touch. Madison is a 2.5 hour drive from Chicago and less than that from Milwaukee. A quick flight from Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis of less than an hour in addition to the already mentioned 3 daily flights from DCA. That is a strange definition of "middle of nowhere."

Yup! It's also a 3.5-4 hour Drive to Minneapolis. Easy drive

However, once you get outside the Madison circle, it is rural. I know---my kid lives there. But that is how most of the midwest is as well when you exit the suburbs of a big city it gets "rural" fast. But yes, Madison is easy to get to/from many other large cities fast
