| Why can't MCPS and schools communicate properly? All the questions on this thread should have been answered by MCPS and by the schools. We are almost at the end of the 1st quarter and have not gotten any communication about this and it's a really big change. |
If they are different than the NSL and Bio why list them all together? |
| It was a line on our Freshman meeting PowerPoint, but was not a topic of discussion at back to school night - no clarity whatsoever |
Yes, this is what my kid's math teacher has in their syllabus: after All Tasks/Assessments (80%) and Practice/Prepararion (10%), there is a third category, District Assessments (10%). "Known as progress checks, these will be given out every quarter and will be for a grade. It will not be of the entire quarter, but a certain unit." |
This is the biggest problem I have. No one warned kids or families the the District Exams were going to be counting for as much. Further they are not giving fair warning that the district assessment is coming up. Yes, kids are actually going to class and getting surprised with these test. |

This isn’t as big a deal as some seem to think it is. The grading policy already allows assignments to be up to 25% of the quarter grade. Just because a very specific assignment is broken out so they can pull that specific data across the county does not mean there’s really any impact to course grades. |
| This is also the case for middle school. English assessments are counting for 10% in certain quarters, as are the high-school level classes. |
Yup. And honestly, I support this decision for that reason. If you tell the kids it doesn't count for their grades, there's no incentive to take it seriously. This also pushes teachers to ensure their curriculum aligns with district assessments. |
| The problem is that there was no notice, no communication from MCPS, the schools or teachers about this change. |
This is a completely different topic and test |
Our teacher talked about it at BTSN, and it was in her slides. |
Teachers have never taught a standardized curriculum in many of these subjects no matter what MCPS says. If they are starting to have kids take these tests for a grade there should have been notice and discussion about what problem they were trying to address and start with how these subjects are being taught before springing all this testing on the kids. |
I just checked the slides for DC’s teachers. No one mentioned it! |
