What Happens if You Can't Pass Algebra 1 MCAP?

Anonymous
My child is in 8th grade and has a math LD. She's in Algebra 1 and getting by (sort of), but I have serious concerns whether she could pass the MCAP with a score of at least 750. Is there a way to get a waiver if you have an IEP? Is this something to discuss w/her high school counselor?

No one is required to pass MCAP. The requirement is to _take_ MCAP.

I thought you have to pass the A1 MCAP to graduate w/a score of 750 or higher.

Correct, you have to pass. The kids who took the test during covid years got an exception but this year's 8th graders have to pass. I'm interested in this question too, especially since we won't even know the results until next spring.

Correct you have to pass. And this is going to become even more stringent with the implementation of Maryland Blueprint.

MCPS claimed that the reason it took a year this time was because they are calibrating the test. It shouldn’t take a year going forward.

Passing MCAP has not yet been established as a requirement.

I keep seeing passing the MCAP as a requirement without any sourcing. Anyone have a link to the Algebra/graduation requirements?

The MCAP language differs depending on the student's year of graduation. You can see all the versions of the graduation requirements here:

Thx. so, for class of 2025 and beyond:
MATHEMATICS
4 credits, including 1 with instruction in algebra aligned with the Maryland High School Assessment for algebra or 1 or more
credits in subsequent mathematics courses for which algebra I is a prerequisite, and 1 with instruction in geometry aligned
with the content standards for geometry.

STATE REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENTS GRADUATING IN 2018 AND LATER: Students graduating in 2018 and later must be
enrolled in a math course in each year of high school. This may result in students earning more than 4 credits in math for graduation.

There's nothing about the Algebra MCAP in there. Our MS counselor was surprised about the req for 4 years of math in HS regardless of MS math taken.

Yes, keep reading further down for the MCAP section:

Algebra 1:
Course credit earned in Algebra 1 AND
• Pass the Algebra 1 assessment prior to 2019-2020, OR
• Take the Algebra 1 assessment
• If the Algebra 1 course was passed during 2019-2020, a COVID waiver was awarded to meet the assessment requirement.
No additional test participation is required and the student’s test status will read as “Not Required.”

wait so mine is class of 2027--so all you have to do is take the assessment not pass the assessment? I'm so confused

Yes, that is what it says.

It's because MCAP was new and untested and until they know it's accurately measuring student performance it wouldn't be right to do anything with the scores. I think they hope to have it addressed in a couple of cycles.

You don’t have to pass the Algebra MCAP. However, beginning next year(23-24) it will count for 20% of the course grade.
