| lol you guys think dm is predominantly black and Latinos? Keep thinking that. Definitely a diamond in the rough in PG |
This is the answer. |
I don't know what your definition of "predominant" is, but according to US News and World Report, Dematha's student population is: 30.6% White 45.5% Black 12,7% Biracial 11.2% Hispanic Minorities are 70% of the student population. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not to their own facts. |
Looks like it’s predominantly White, Black, Biracial, and Hispanic. |
That’s not what predominant means… It’s predominantly Black and White. |
|
Yes, it’s predominantly black and white. It’s also predominantly students of color. Fun thing about grouping statistics, you slice and dice and recombine to make almost any point you want.
The fact is, Dematha does have a lower percentage of white students than many of the private and Catholic schools popularly discussed on this board, most of which are not in PG county. |

From my experience, it's predominantly made up of great kids that excel in athletics, arts, academics, service and community. That's all that matters.
It caters to boys of all backgrounds, racially, economically, socially and academically. It's not trying to be anything other than DeMatha, which is what makes it a truly unique and special place. |
It’s not “all the way out” in PG. it is no more than 10-12 minutes from the DC border and no where near as far out as Good Counsel. I imagine most parents aren’t choosing between those two schools as they are more than an hour apart during rush hour. |
Well said. |
Agree. The location is not "all the way out" in PG. It's pretty accessible from D.C. but it does pull from a different geographic area than a lot of the Catholic schools discussed here. For example, I'd guess there are more Anne Arundel/Annapolis families that choose DeMatha that probably aren't considering GC, SJC, Gonzaga, etc. and are maybe deciding between Spalding and DeMatha, for example. Likewise, many families feeding in from parts of eastern Montgomery County are probably equidistant from GC and DeMatha and choosing between those two. In D.C., I bet it boils down to SJC, Gonzaga or DeMatha for boys. This is just a guess, but I'd imagine DeMatha has fewer students coming from Northern Virginia than, say, Gonzaga, due to location. And, given the abundance of other private options (and better public schools than D.C. and PG generally), probably fewer students coming from the very most affluent parts of MoCo, but plenty of kids coming from various parts of MoCo otherwise. |
| Because it is for MC and poor kids OP. It is not elite or aspirational. |
If this is the standard, then many of the schools on this board would not get any attention here either. And, no, it's not only for MC and poor kids (not that there'd be anything wrong with that), but keep thinking that if it makes you feel better. |
no. What? |
| Stop trying to make fetch happen OP. |
Disagree with your logic - if its predominately any racial category that would be 45.5% AA. |
