Matthew Stanton Dunne III before the election.

Hah. You're right; I hadn't known that.

"In 2022, Dunne changed his name. Before this, his name was Matthew Stanton Dunne III. A court order dated Sept. 22, 2022, changed it to Mateo Oramas Reyes Dunne.

In an April article published in “On The Move,” Dunne was pressed about the decision to change his name. In response, Dunne claimed that he made the change to honor his wife’s Cuban family, who considered him one of their own after his father’s death when he was 18.

“During the pandemic, I decided to honor the people I call Mami and Papi by changing my name to Mateo Oramas Reyes Dunne. They call me Mateo. Oramas is Mami’s maiden name, and Reyes is Papi’s last name. They are my family, and I love them with all my heart,” said Dunne."

.... um, OK. But also hard to believe that he didn't consider which name would be more useful in Democratic politics.

Politicians. What are you gonna do?

Presumably his parents don’t mind that he basically spit on them, their heritage, and their reasons for choosing the name they gave him.

Odd that you’d refer to his parents’ feelings when the article makes clear his father died when he was 18, longer before he changed his first and middle names.

Why are you obsessing about this as opposed to the LWNJ policies and wasteful spending of a Karl Frisch?

Ha, exactly. He’s still supporting the centreville expansion, so he’s more of an opportunist than anything.

I find it hilarious that these extreme left sb members’ hallmark position is that we have to be extremely frugal. It’s like they’ve become fiscal libertarians.

I find it absurd that SB member voted against Dunne's Hayfield footballl related motion. 3 in favor of FCPS investigation were Dunne, R Anderson, McElveen. Board docs 8/29/24 "I move that the School Board preserve the integrity of our athletic programs and provide a level playing field for FCPS athletes by directing the Superintendent to retain an outside law firm to conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation of all allegations arising out of or relating to the recruitment and transfer of football players to the Hayfield HS football team from high schools outside of Fairfax County, to include involuntary reassignments of FCPS personnel, improper fundraising, improper expenditure of funds, cyberbullying and social media policy violations, and residency and eligibility of players.

Motion by Mateo Dunne, second by Ricardy J Anderson.
Final Resolution: Motion Fails
Yes: Mateo Dunne, Ricardy J Anderson, Ryan McElveen
No: Marcia St John-Cunning, Robyn Lady, Rachna S Heizer, Karl V Frisch - Chair, Sandy B Anderson - Vice Chair, Kyle McDaniel, Seema Dixit, Melanie K Meren
Not Present at Vote: Ilryong Moon"

If his family has been calling him Mateo for decades what's the big deal? However the same meeting had the IB contract [with increases] bundled into a consent agenda. No members had the thing moved to an action item triggering discussion for the record and public. It's a sole source contract that expires on 12/31/2025 which seems odd since it doesn't match a school year or the period that exams would be outsourced for grading.

VDOE has stats on senior IB enrollment and IB diplomas per school. Fiscally irresponsible to continue with IBMY, career/tech, plus any school that has low utilization of the program. Budget.

Bumping this. Matteo was on the money!

This is something that is hard to shake. Dude changes his name to “Mateo” just before an election to honor his in-laws’ family? Yeah if that’s not cultural appropriation, I don’t what is.

Divide the county in two and let Dunne be the king of Southern Fairfax. Northern/Western Fairfax still have no reason to trust him.

Sure the timing was weird, but his first name is the same. Mateo = Matthew.

In my family everyone has two names. Some have their english name on their birth record and their name from our ancestral place of origin on religious records, for example. Both names are their names. I honestly don’t see why people make such a big fuss generally about this.

I see this all the time with my friends who immigrated from or were born in Asia. Again, no big deal.

It is sweet to honor someone he was close to by changing the spelling/language. It would’ve been better maybe to do it at a different time, but when is it really ever an ideal time?

Please stop, Mrs. Dunne.

New poster. I agree. Who cares?

My family is from Spain and when we visit all Anglo names get "translated," at least by the older generations. Not the same thing at all, but just saying... this is not a big deal.

No, really it is a big deal. Please name how many white 40-something men you know born, raised and living in the US that have taken their name and changed it to the version from another culture.
This was a political move, pure and simple.

Not a man, but Hillary Baldwin changed her name to Hilaria Baldwin because her family went to Spain before.

I know of people who have changed their first, middle, and/or surnames out of true love for their partner. Usually in their 30s however. It is becoming more and more common especially as more and more people from different cultures marry.
