This is something that is hard to shake. Dude changes his name to “Mateo” just before an election to honor his in-laws’ family? Yeah if that’s not cultural appropriation, I don’t what is.

Sure the timing was weird, but his first name is the same. Mateo = Matthew.

In my family everyone has two names. Some have their english name on their birth record and their name from our ancestral place of origin on religious records, for example. Both names are their names. I honestly don’t see why people make such a big fuss generally about this.

I see this all the time with my friends who immigrated from or were born in Asia. Again, no big deal.

It is sweet to honor someone he was close to by changing the spelling/language. It would’ve been better maybe to do it at a different time, but when is it really ever an ideal time?

New poster. I agree. Who cares?

My family is from Spain and when we visit all Anglo names get "translated," at least by the older generations. Not the same thing at all, but just saying... this is not a big deal.

No, really it is a big deal. Please name how many white 40-something men you know born, raised and living in the US that have taken their name and changed it to the version from another culture.
This was a political move, pure and simple.

Not a man, but Hillary Baldwin changed her name to Hilaria Baldwin because her family went to Spain before.

🤡 Bonus points for naming the infamous Heee-Lahr-eee-ah who generated one of the longest threads in DCUM history (over 500 pages) with her cosplay to trap a Hollywood actor and then squeeze out baby after baby after baby…That gal is bat s h i t crazy. But you are right that she, like Mateo, has engaged in some cultural misappropriation in order to gain something.

I had a friend change her last name at 18 to honor her step dad. It happens. If his in-laws and wife are okay with it, I don’t care.

Oh goodness. This is a terrible example if you are trying to defend Mateo.

Let’s move past the silliness of his name change - of course there were political benefits to that given the demographics of the Mount Vernon district - and focus on his bravery. The guy has been on local/regional TV, radio, and newspapers calling out Reid. It seems to me that that requires some stones!

I’m a Republican who has never in my life voted for a Democrat, but he might become the first.

The benefits of getting a Democratic endorsement in that area far outweigh the benefits of changing one’s name. Republicans have endorsed multiple Hispanics to run in areas of NoVa with a lot of Hispanic voters and they still get trashed by Democratic candidates. What Dunne is doing, however, is increasing his name recognition, and that could come in handy if he runs in primaries against other Democrats in the future.

No it isn't.

🙄 Mateo is the same name as Matthew. Who cares?

I observed this guy for YEARS on our local neighborhood forum. He was dismissive, aggressive, condescending, belligerent, rude, often abusive in his comments, and not worthy of public office. I mean, somehow he managed to get the Dem nomination which, kudos to him, I guess. He sure cleaned up his online presence before running. Then changed the name of course. But he is an opportunistic narcissist. Doing one thing that is 'right' in challenging Reid (a pretty low bar), doesn't negate his past. And he signed up for this scrutiny when he ran for office.
