That’s clearly vandalism and especially doesn’t belong on an elementary school sign but I think MCPD are just wrong in calling it anti-semitic, and it doesn’t help anyone to conflate anti-Israel sentiments with anti-semitic sentiments.

It is also, sadly, a true statement.

Not sure how being anti an entire country and its population is not problematic. Who does "Israel" refer to? Bibi? Jews? The Israeli people? Because we were told not to conflate civilians with their leadership on the Palestinian side. Folks were labeled Islamophobic if they did that. What's good for the goose....

No one said it wasn't problematic. But it's much more acceptable to criticize the actions of a government than to discriminate against a culture and religion. The former implies that the people of Israel may not necessarily agree with their leader, and that the leader is wrong. The latter implies a general contempt for an entire way of life and an entire population. Surely you can appreciate the vast difference?

Also, some of us are really tired of being labeled anti-Semites every time we criticize the genocidal actions of that horrible Netanyahu and his far-right cronies, as well as the illegal land-grabs perpetrated for decades by a deluded group of settlers. There are Jews who do not want any of this, and who hate that Palestinians are being massacred like this, for God's sake. This has nothing to do with respect for the Jews as a people. Goodness knows they're victims too.

I did not label you. You sound angry.

I am angry, your criticism was implied. There have been too many threads on DCUM abusing posters for not being rah-rah supporters of Israel, and immediately labeling them as anti-Semites. Students have been punished for protesting. University leaders have been pushed out. While the rest of the world looks on aghast and wonders why America supports the massacre of 30K Gaza civilians and counting. We continue to ship them heavy weaponry even now. It's repulsive.

Look, if someone spray painted “Russia commits war crimes and wrongly invades neighbors” that would be accurate (though entirely inappropriate for an elementary school!) right?

Definitely inappropriate. I don't usually lump the people of a country in with their leadership, particularly civilians who have no role in a war.

That’s my point-imo “Russia” clearly refers to the actions of the state. While no vandalism of elementary schools is appropriate “Russia xyz” is clearly different than “Russians xyz…” and the same goes for Israel.

The problem is, pamplets, vandalism, signs, slogans and the like have been focused in areas here in the U.S. where Jewish people live, many of whom have no ties to Israel. I am not Jewish but have friends who are. They are just trying to live their lives.

There are so many security cameras in downtown Bethesda. If they don’t catch the perps, then the police have gone soft

Hogan has denounced the hate crime. Has anyone seen a statement from Alsobrooks?

That’s what I was thinking there’s gotta be more cameras down there than Fort Knox

No one is asking you to support Israel. The real question is, what is the motive of this vandalism? Last I checked, Bethesda is not part of Israel.

This. AIPAC has very cleverly set it up so any criticism of Israel is labeled anti-Semitic. Every country is allowed to be criticized apparently except Israel. They are untouchable and can do no wrong

Really? So if the message was scrawled on an elementary school with a sizable Chinese or Ethiopian population and "China" or "Ethiopia" was written instead of Israel, no one would have a problem with that? Come on...

I thought this had nothing to do with American Jews. Confused.

Is there a sizeable Israeli population at Bethesda ES? I didn’t realize that.

Doubt there is. Which is why the vandalism location is confusing. Who is the intended audience?

How would I know? I’m not the vandal.

Are you suggesting the content of the message becomes anti-semitic if it’s posted where Jews might see it?

ffs. Spray painting “Israel rapes children” on an elementary school where Jewish children attend is an antisemitic terror tactic.

It’s awful to post any political vandalism at an elementary! But arguments like the above are ridiculous.
