Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
|
I live on that block of Del Ray ave and didn't see anything. Must have missed it.
Probably bored teens - school is still out this week. |

According to a picture posted to reddit the spray painted phrase was “Israel rapes men, women, and children”.
That’s clearly vandalism and especially doesn’t belong on an elementary school sign but I think MCPD are just wrong in calling it anti-semitic, and it doesn’t help anyone to conflate anti-Israel sentiments with anti-semitic sentiments. It is also, sadly, a true statement. |
It's anti-Israel. Not anti-Semitic. Also, it's true. Also it's entirely inappropriate on any building, especially next to the 2 preschools and 1 elementary school on that block! It is only appropriate on the wall of the Israeli Embassy. |
| There were additional photos of nearby streets and one of them showed something about "Bad Jews" |
| It’s becoming more typical in Bethesda. Smh… |
Not sure how being anti an entire country and its population is not problematic. Who does "Israel" refer to? Bibi? Jews? The Israeli people? Because we were told not to conflate civilians with their leadership on the Palestinian side. Folks were labeled Islamophobic if they did that. What's good for the goose.... |
Um, that is definitely anti-semitic. |
Look, if someone spray painted “Russia commits war crimes and wrongly invades neighbors” that would be accurate (though entirely inappropriate for an elementary school!) right? |
The state of Israel is guilty of those crimes through the IDF, and the apparent unwillingness to take any responsibility. You can say being anti an entire country is “problematic” but it still isn’t anti-semitism. |
Definitely inappropriate. I don't usually lump the people of a country in with their leadership, particularly civilians who have no role in a war. |
No one said it wasn't problematic. But it's much more acceptable to criticize the actions of a government than to discriminate against a culture and religion. The former implies that the people of Israel may not necessarily agree with their leader, and that the leader is wrong. The latter implies a general contempt for an entire way of life and an entire population. Surely you can appreciate the vast difference? Also, some of us are really tired of being labeled anti-Semites every time we criticize the genocidal actions of that horrible Netanyahu and his far-right cronies, as well as the illegal land-grabs perpetrated for decades by a deluded group of settlers. There are Jews who do not want any of this, and who hate that Palestinians are being massacred like this, for God's sake. This has nothing to do with respect for the Jews as a people. Goodness knows they're victims too. |
That’s my point-imo “Russia” clearly refers to the actions of the state. While no vandalism of elementary schools is appropriate “Russia xyz” is clearly different than “Russians xyz…” and the same goes for Israel. |
I did not label you. You sound angry. |
Then you need to learn English. Russia is not Russians. Israel is not Israelis, and it's not Jews. America is not Americans. America is responsible for the killing of more than 400 THOUSAND civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and Pakistan in recent decades. Innocent men, women and children going about their daily lives. This is not counting official army deaths from those nations. Are YOU responsible? No. But America is. Wonder why they hate us and keep breeding new terrorists and funding Hamas and Hezbollah... |
