You're right. I found it listed in the 2024 magnet course catalog. Magnet level courses are comparable generally comparable to college level equivalents. For example, many who take linear algebra at Blair test out of it at UMD. |
The truly strongest students needs cannot be met by AP at their high school so they turn to DE instead. |
I wouldn't consider this to be true for organic chemistry. It may be roughly comparable to a community college course, but it's not going to cover the same depth of content as an organic chemistry course at a major university. It just won't. Students should consider it an intro course and retake orgo when they get to university. --Organic chemistry PhD who taught the course for several years |
| Clarksburg is going to offer organic chemistry. They are having a pH D teach the class. Should be good. |
| I hear WPMS offers it in 8th grade. |
No, the Magnet admin says that the magnet elective classes are NOT replacements for college courses, they are samplers/tasters that go deep on sample topics. Linear Algebra (along with Multivariable and Diff Equ) is an exception because that's on the regular math sequence for MCPS / Dual Enrollment taught at High School Organic Chem is only Dual Enrollment taught at the college. |
Only for specialized pre-professional non graduate-school-bound college degrees like criminology, or for post-AP highly accelerated math students. |
PP whose kid took it at Blair a couple.of years ago. I agree and my kid is planning to retake in college. But I have heard the Blair high school class.is helpful prep for a notoriously difficult college subject. |
