Protests around Netanyahu visit

There was something in the Washington Post article months ago about the GW encampments — MPD didn’t break it up (at the time) because they were managing fine and from their analysis and deep experience managing the (many) DC protests/“1A
Events.” Pretty big contrast to how the NYPD was acting at the same time. That has stayed with me.

I know they aren’t perfect (the kettling and the other massive issues around the George Floyd protests come to mind, but I do *not* hold Jan 6 as a failure) but I do have high confidence that MPD can manage even large protests for Netanyahu’s visit.

I might be wrong but I’m not worried about it.

My kid goes to GW. The protesters were peaceful, and every time DS walked past their little camp, he saw everyone studying for finals. GW is really not a hardcore protest campus. The students generally have a good relationship with the police, which explains their measured response.

While I'm sure Bibi protesters will be of a different caliber than well-behaved GW kids, I too am not worried.

No, I’m not worried. The security perimeter will snarl traffic but it’s there for a reason. The protests are 99% nonviolent and most people are back in the office during the week or back home (not on campus) for the summer.

Far more worried about the violence committed on his watch overseas than about any violence happening to him while he’s here.

Burning an American flag isn't illegal.

They vandalized the building I work in at the previous large protest. Still not particularly worried about this week.

But these violent incidents are troubling

Vandalizing a building is less illegal than genociding innocent Gazans

Definitely, but that wasn't an organized protest, it was a random antisemitic jerk. I'm Jewish, and I rode my bike today past the Israeli embassy to my previously vandalized office without any incident.

I'd personally like it if the protests by the hostage families to pressure Netanyahu to agree to (literally any) ceaasefire deal that will end their captivity got more attention than the ones that just demand a ceasefire, without mentioning a hostage exchange. But I don't find any of the protests personally threatening.

Why not walk from Union station. Or switch to blue line

Of course. Thank goodness for these protestors for bringing attention the plight of the poor, innocent Gazans who do absolutely nothing wrong against Israel. Bibi totally deserves these protestors because Israel just out of the blue decided to genocide *say it with me everyone!* poor, innocent little Gazans who do nothing wrong.

It's a 30 minute walk. Or you can walk 2 blocks and then take the Metro from Navy Memorial to Capitol South.

The innocent Gazans getting killed were not involved in the Oct 7 attack. Israel is within its right to go after the Hamas perpetrators but has no right to create the collateral damage it’s caused on families. This is not difficult to understand. Stop playing the victim by assuming I’m absolving Hamas of their horrible actions.

Netanyahu’s speech was excellent today. I underestimated him.

The protests are encouraged and even partially paid for by Iran.

National Intelligence Director Haines confirmed this last week.

ONLY 6 people arrested? Are they already released or are they confined to lockup?

I'll be sure to tell my friend who was at the protest that she should keep an eye out for a check in the mail from Iran. I know she'll be super-excited to hear this, although to be fair, she's still waiting for her check from George Soros for participating in the Women's March in January 2017, and that might temper her excitement.

He's not putting anyone in D.C. at any risk. Risk of what?

And why would he go "back to Poland," a country he's never lived in and which his father moved away from more than 100 years ago, exactly?
