Who makes the best cheap cake?

We've gotten very good and attractive cakes from both Harris Teeter and Giant. I actually think it's a draw.

I have also heard good reviews about Costco cakes and cupcakes.

Love costco's cakes, but not a fan of the cupcakes. I think it's only because they remind me too much of their giant muffins. My husband calls them "mupcakes."

Giant, just get the whipped cream frosting which is yummy and not very sweet at all.

just go and ask for a sample.

I actually had a very good chocolate cake from Shopper's Food Warehouse last year.

Definitely definitely Wegmans. Unfortunately it's a bit of a drive, but the cakes are worth it! We do an annual trek out to Wegmans to get my DD's bday cake.

Another Costco cake hater here. I find it disgusting. The icing tasted like shortening to me. I actually have stopped eating cakes at parties because so many of them are Cosco and I cannot make myself eat it (but hey, probably not a bad thing for my waistline). I've always wondered if Cosco cake is like a big joke or like the Emporor with no clothes. Everyone says they love it, so everyone else feels like they are suppose to like it, so no one will admit that it is horrible. I'm telling you folks, the emporer has no clothes!

I love Giant and Safeway - but I love supersweet icing.

But I Safeway and Harris Teeter have a "whipped" icing that isn't as sweet.

How about making a Duncan Hines cake? They are yummy.

Another Costco cake hater here (and admitted cake snob). I also don't understand the appeal of the cake. I guess "hater" is a strong word, I just don't think it's worth all the praise. Frosting is tooth-achingly sweet and kind of gritty, and the cake is dry. Is it the cheap price tag that gets everyone excited?

Giant used to have its own bakery and really had excellent cakes. They tasted as good as the ones from the Ritz Carlton.

I love the gritty, sugary sweet icing. Love it. Especially on top of a dense, moist poundcake.

Don't belong to Costco but we really like Sam's cakes. I was less impressed with their cupcakes, so next year for our birthday parties I'm switching back to their cakes. $15-20 for a large cake and they have lots of custom styles/decorations.

Giant cake lover here. I think their cupcakes are great, too!

I had a Giant cake for my daughter's b-day and people were asking me later where I got it - it was a HUGE hit. Really yummy - yellow cake, white icing.

If Wegman's is close, their cakes are very good. If not, we always go to Giant for ours; usually good.
