Who makes the best cheap cake?

Harris Teeter? Costco? I want something that tastes good, with frosting that's not TOO sickeningly sweet, but still reasonably priced. It's for a baptism, if that makes any difference - so a small guest list.

Not sure if it's the same everywhere, but I like Safeway (we're no longer in the DC area, though). Ours sells single slices so it would be easy to taste. . .

Mmmm Safeway. Very sweet, but we love it!

I've heard a million people talk about how great Costco's cakes are!

Wegmans has a really good bakery.

OP - drive yourself directly to Harris teeter and purchase the double layer old fashion fudge cake. Its the best damn thing that I have ever purchased from a market and everyone loves it. Its moist, has a ton of flavor and doesn't taste liked whipped sugar. mmm I want one just thinking about it.

they also have excellent red velvet, carrot and raspberry vinilla.

I vote for costco.

Costco - $16.95 for a very large cake and they are great.

Costco by far! The frosting doesn't taste like that fake grocery store frosting. They use cream cheese or butter cream, I think. And the filings are great--custard or other choices. Yummy!!

Stop talking about cake unless you are willing to share. Who has cake?

Entenmann's will do in a pinch.

Giant yellow sheet cake with white frosting is incredible. I'd take it over anything else on the market.

I think Costco's cake are gross. Absolutely disgusting. At my baby shower, I was so excited for the cake and then the hostess told me it was from Costco. I remember eating a few bites so it would be obvious that I detested it. I shoved way far down in the trash when no one was looking.

PP here (who hates Costco cakes) - I should say that I am a cake snob and really only like real buttercream (PP - sorry to break it to you, but Costco's "buttercream" is not real buttercream). If that is your thing and you are close to Fairfax, definitely give Victoria's Cakery a buzz. Their cakes are amazing and reasonably priced (IMO) for a real bakery.

Rock on with your Costco cake hating self! More for the rest of us.

BTW, the hostess saw you put it in the trash can.
