Are you talking about a JR transcript or SWW? My kid's SWW transcript from last August does not have rank on it; nor does their spring 2024 transcript. FWIW, my kid is a rising senior, so maybe it's only provided for seniors? |
| Walls does not do class ranking. Pre-pandemic a group of parents on LSAT petitioned to have it removed because their kids were always lower ranked than the GW kids (this was before every class had a GPA bump for honors classes and the GW kids would have an AP GPA bump for every class they took). Obviously these were UMC parents and they got their wish and ranking was removed. If they’re kid couldn’t be #1, no kid could be #1. |
| Ah. Well that would be annoying if all kids in GW program got a 1 point bump for every single class they took at GW (in 11th-12th). Not a fair comparison. Better option would have been to remove the 15 kids per year in GW program from global high school class ranking ….. |
| Prepandemic, it was harder to get into Walls and harder to get As at Walls. Now, probably 50 percent of the kids are getting straight As. |
That was suggested but the parents really fought tooth and nail for no ranking. There was one parent in particular with an agenda but I’ll leave it at that. |
Does anyone know what percent for which this is actually true? I thought my rising senior with all As would be an exception and would be viewed as such by colleges but maybe we need to reassess? |
You should probably reassess. It looks like colleges have caught on as well because there weren’t as many Ivy+ admits from Walls this year (compared to past years). |
Go onto Naviance. Pick a college that your child is interested in. See how many student have applied that are around the same GPA. I remember seeing a handful of 4.6 GPAs - but the reality is that at that point it is not about your peers at Walls that you need to "reassess", it is about really understanding that there are a lot of great students from around the world who have done some really interesting things through high school who are applying to top colleges. |
This. Elite college admits are definitely down at Walls (and JR) this year. It does probably has the do with the insane grade inflation. When everyone (or a huge percentage) gets straight As it benefits no one. |
It would be great if parents pressured DCPS to stop grade inflation for these reasons. It has a lot of detrimental effects but teachers have been screaming into the void about it. |
Can’t speak to grade inflation at Walls but for the past 3 years only 4% of graduating seniors have a 4.0 unweighted GPA. |
Darn it. There you go, citing actual data. Wasn’t better when we all could just make up our own “facts” like everyone gets all As all the time? You ruin everything! |
That’s JR, though. Parents sometimes post here saying “my JR kid has an unweighted 3.7, what does that mean for college?” But at Walls no one ever seems to admit to less than a 4.0. |
Isn’t this thread about Walls? |
This was in response to a comment about rampant grade inflation in DCPS. More relevant perhaps to this thread -- we know a few Walls kids who graduated in the past two years and they weren't As across the board. So "everyone gets all As at Walls" is not true. |
