Grading at Walls

Is this at Jackson Reed? I’m not sure I believe it. Their AP Physics teacher is a rockstar or so I was told

The teacher that teaches AP Physics C is a rock star. He also taught one section of AP Physics 1. A new teacher- a biology teacher who had never taught physics before- taught the rest of the AP Physics sections.

Oh boy. My kid is signed up to take AP Physics 1 at JR this fall. It doesn’t sound fair to make a Bio teacher teach AP Physics. Not fair to the teacher or students

Not clear if this teacher will teach it again.

What are the GW kids? Can’t all Walls kids take GW classes?

JR has struggled with AP Physics 1 for many many years. It is a hard class to teach but for some reason they just can’t find someone competent to take it over

These are kids in the GW program (I can never remember the official name). They take all GW classes junior and senior year. They essentially don’t attend Walls anymore in terms of academics.

Nope.

The dual enrollment program at GW is only open to a small number of selected rising seniors (and they can be from any DCPS school and, I assume, charters as well if they go through DCPS--not just Walls). They take 1 course in the fall semester and, if they do well, they can take up to 2 courses during the spring semester. GW only allows students to enroll in certain lower-level courses (1000 and 2000 level), and those are only available if there is space after GW students have signed up. So, yes, you could easily end up taking Islamic history up to the year 1500 or some other less popular course.

Oh…I know JR kids who are signed up to take classes at GW in the fall. It’s probably easier from Walls given its proximity but it sounds like the regular DCPS dual enrollment program.

What is your ‘nope’ in reference to?

Walls actually has its own program with GW in addition to the DCPS-wide one. I don't know much about it because my Walls kid wasn't interested (though they have taken 2 courses at GW so far)

There are two programs with GW. One is a two-year program ("GW Early College Program"), leading to an Associates' Degree, that accepts 15 SWW students a year and essentially replaces their junior and senior years. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ee0f425c4f3ed4b48c52995/t/5f454a9410072376c1398c41/1598376597331/What+is+the+GWECP.pdf

The second ("School Without Walls Exposure Program") enables SWW students to take one (or maybe sometimes two? not sure) class per semester at GW. https://nondegree.gwu.edu/school-without-walls

Do kids who get an associates degree at GW finish their BA there or do they apply to other colleges?
