DP. My understanding of the Basis model is that it would take a lot of support at home to catch up academically and pass the tests. If the kids are coming in behind and Basis keeps its “up or out” approach, we’re gonna see a disproportionate number of EA kids dropping out. |
Success at BASIS depends on being able to pass tests based on cumulative learning - intelligence isn’t enough if the kids are starting out behind & don’t have resources at home to catch up. Personally I think it would be good for BASIS to somewhat soften what I understand is their approach to high-stakes testing. Like, kids can advance with a lower score but have to double up the next year on math or writing. That way you’re keeping the rigor of BASIS but giving kids more chances. |
what happened?? |
So what’s it like for a kid with no language background to enter DCI in 8th? |
It's fine, from what I've heard. |
It's fine, but their language class will be with the lowest-ability kids. |
I think a lot of things happened. Nearby DCPS IBs improved somewhat, attracting people who don't really want Spanish and only liked Mundo because it was otherwise appealing. Obviously Calle Ocho pulled a lot of kids off the P St. waiting list. Losing the DCI guarantee. People opening their eyes to the very serious behavior problems and academic weaknesses, rookie teachers and high teacher turnover (obviously those things are related). I think there was a feeling 6 or 7 years ago that Truxton Circle issues would soon improve, but that hasn't happened. |
Is that just the language class, or other classes? |
My reaction exactly: wow. Half the waitlist blown through already. |
Not happening. That model (pass the test in order to continue) is true across all the BASIS charter schools in the country. I personally think it's great, and I'm so thankful to have at least one option in DC that has high standards and no social promotion. They do offer a lot of tutoring and help -- all the teachers have after school hours where kids can ask for help, they have peer tutoring and Georgetown students in to tutor. So their model is not to lower the standards, but to help students meet them. |
It depends. If you're entering for French, and you're with the strongest DCI kids from Spanish/Chinese, who are starting a second language (French), then your schedule will at least partly mesh with theirs. I don't know if anyone at DCI enrolls in Chinese as their second language (I would expect fewer kids like that, but it happens). It also depends if you place in a "ninth grade math for eighth graders" class (I believe there were two classes like this, this year). If you're placed in Chinese 1 with kids who've been doing that for several years, that's a whole other experience. |
Only 30 incoming 5th graders with an EA preference even listed Basis. There is a tremendous amount of self-selection. The at-risk percentage will be below 10% even with the preference. |
+1. I predict they will go thru their waitlist. |
DCPS schools that basically clears their waitlist 1st and up and anyone can get in
