If your DC liked UMiami, where else did they apply?

I graduated from Syracuse and loved it!

The students at our school with stats in the highest quadrant (so above Miami's average) were all deferred in EA. I think they would have needed to ED to get in. The deferred students then get nagged by Miami to switch to ED. At a minimum, they would have to write a very strong (I want to go to Miami and will accept) LOCI to get in. Students accepted EA are in the middle stats range for Miami toward the top, but not over it.

Either way, students have to show a ton of demonstrated interest for that school so if your stats are high and you are coming from an area where it would seem you can afford to ED, you need to ED.

Was this a public or private high school?

We are definitely concerned about yield protection. According to Naviance, there are a good number of EA acceptances in my DC's range. There look to be very, very few ED green check circles. The EA waitlist seems to hit a wall at 1430 SAT and DC is above that. I know there are no guarantees, though. DC has toured and will continue to show interest. Can you tell by looking at Naviance if an EA deferral was switched to ED? Would that be Waitlist/Accept in green? I'm not seeing any of those.

Not yield protection. Having the stats is only the baseline to be seriously considered, certainly not enough to get in. Thats how holistic, selective admission works.

Very different at our private.
Pretty much everyone over 3.8uw got in…

Other reach /target schools to target depending on major:

NYU
Wake
BC
WashU
Tulane
GW
Syracuse
Northeastern
BU
Case
Tufts

UMiami has way surpassed Syracuse. Syracuse and GWU aren't on the same levels as those schools. Wake, UMiami applicant pool are far, far stronger. Night and day.

Syracuse is not in the same conversation as Wake or USC.

Syracuse
25%-75% SAT
1280-1410

Wake Forest
25%-75%
1400-1500

USC
25%-75%
1460-1540

Agreed. A kid aiming for UMiami as a target has no shot at USC. And the 1400s score will not get them any Merit. If you’re looking for aid OP skip Wake and USC look to Syracuse and Fordham levels.

USC is now roughly 5%-6% first year admit rate. Plus as a private with its very own unique application, it is...unique. So I would consider that more a lottery, not due to stats but the odd nature of how admissions staff want to be entertained in the app. Also keep in mind that there are not as many top privates on the west coast, so you have all the west coast people plus the east coast that throw the dice too.

I think Wake is a good option but definitely different vibe, strong students there, more of a liberal arts plus pre-professional vibe and more traditional campus too. Heavy greek scene fyi.

Vanderbilt (ED), UVA (esp in state), or if you want to stay north then BC.

As an fyi, Miami received over 56,000 applications this cycle for roughly 8,000 admits (so call it 15% admit rate). Would expect over 60,000 next cycle.

We toured Miami and a couple students mentioned the similarities of vibes to USC, focus on the arts, proximity to a city scene. Not a lot of schools quite like that with strong academics to boot. I will say I have never been on a campus like that in my life.

Despite all the articles that discuss $90k or $95k cost of attendance, only about 15% of families pay that. They do give merit.

Just to clarify that the OP realizes that UMiami and this thread of replies know it is a private school?
