If your DC liked UMiami, where else did they apply?

According to stats, UMiami looks promising, but DC will not be applying ED. They are interested in something in the health sciences field, but haven’t landed in a major (anything from psych to PT to med school). DC doesn’t want to go to the west coast. We have enough safeties, but not enough targets or reaches. (4.0, upper 1400s, good ec) TBH, it seems like everything is either a reach or a safety. How does UF, FSU or USF compare?

UF, UGA, Clemson, FIU as a safety.

Any reason not applying ED?

DD graduated from UMiami (loved it and excellent experience, job placement, etc). She says USC, Tulane and Syracuse.

We are not eligible for FA. Their calculator suggests a merit number that would make the cost much more manageable. We are afraid of getting locked in with no merit.

My friend’s daughter is currently there. The only other school she applied to was Tampa

U South Carolina for honors and merit

This is the list, maybe plus Vandy and/or BC.

Reach BC (but Catholic)
Target Villanova (but it’s more homogenous, v white)
SMU (but it’s even wealthier)
Clemson (but heavy Greek, very southern)

University of Florida is not a safety if a non-resident of Florida.

I think they are implying FIU is the safety, not the other schools.

Not your question but worth noting, UMiami definitely seems to focus on managing yield at our HS school. Definitely pay attention to the scattergrams. The students at our school with stats in the highest quadrant (so above Miami's average) were all deferred in EA. I think they would have needed to ED to get in. The deferred students then get nagged by Miami to switch to ED. At a minimum, they would have to write a very strong (I want to go to Miami and will accept) LOCI to get in. Students accepted EA are in the middle stats range for Miami toward the top, but not over it.

Either way, students have to show a ton of demonstrated interest for that school so if your stats are high and you are coming from an area where it would seem you can afford to ED, you need to ED.

We are definitely concerned about yield protection. According to Naviance, there are a good number of EA acceptances in my DC's range. There look to be very, very few ED green check circles. The EA waitlist seems to hit a wall at 1430 SAT and DC is above that. I know there are no guarantees, though. DC has toured and will continue to show interest. Can you tell by looking at Naviance if an EA deferral was switched to ED? Would that be Waitlist/Accept in green? I'm not seeing any of those.

This. Happened to my kid. But we did not switch to ED because DC was aiming higher.
