They somehow care nothing for the minimum wage or just over that workers who also need daycare/childcare. But hey, if daycare starts costing 3500-4k a month then the routine 2500-3k a month it already costs would be totally fine as their subsidized cost, right? Heck someone making 75k a year isn't affording childcare already and that's earning more than double minimum wage. |
+1 from someone who has many family members and colleagues who are caregivers and in caregiving professions who I love dearly. This does NOT help them! |
+1. I've also seen people elsewhere claim this will improve the quality of daycare in the city because the workers will be more "qualified." But this is already a heavily regulated industry with licensing requirements. They are premising almost entirely on "if we force childcare workers to get higher degrees, they'll make more money," without considering that these workers may already have all the knowledge and skill they need to do this job, and you are just creating an unnecessary hoop for them to jump through in order to access these jobs. Absurd. |

This completely unnecessary requirement will only bottleneck the childcare availability in DC even further, make the existing facilities more expensive, and force even more women to drop out of the workforce due to the lack of care options.
Great thinking, DC 👍 |
| I don't understand it either. It is okay to have non educational daycare options. We just need adults who can keep children safe. They don't need to teach or have any child development education. Call it group babysitting if one needs. |
This is absurd. None of them are going to go to college because of this. And if you have kids (it sounds like you clearly don't), you know how good someone is with children has literally nothing to do with their education (and I say this as something with multiple advanced degrees). This is yet another in a long line of ideas from the DC government that maybe sound good in theory, but in practice make the world worse for everyone. |
Why would you want someone low paid, untrained and uneducated responsible to take care of your kids? |
|
Don’t you all understand the government goal here? It will force mostly minority women out-of-business, and force these little children into into corporate institutionalized daycare centers. Years ago I had to sit in for three hours and observe one of these places located off of K St. Every single child was white and every worker was young (20s) and brown. Neither the providers, nor the children seemed to feel valued. It was heartbreaking to witness. How does any of this make any sense? There is zero evidence that a college degree insures quality care of little children. What children do need is: 1. Stability 2. Basic competence 3. Love This new law in DC is a travesty. Only the corporate daycare institutions will benefit. Children deserve better. Parents should have the right to determine the best option for their own child. Wake up, people, or government will regulate you to death. |
Because it doesn't require a college degree to take good care of babies and toddlers. My mother provided in home daycare as well as another family member. Both without college educations and fantastic with children. Why are you so condescending as to how you think of childcare providers? |
|
In the multiple thousands of years of human history, when has anyone ever needed a college degree to raise or take care of kids?
It's hilariously stupid to require it. Never underestimate the power of progressives to screw everything up with good intentions. The road to hell is paved with them. |

I talked to a lot of people about this and pretty much everyone thinks it is dumb.
What was the backstory on the legislation? Who favored it? |
Those of us, like me, in a helping profession, making less than $75K, end up staying home because child care for one is equal to our take home. |
They are getting day care subsidies. |
Tell me you don’t know shit without telling me that you don’t know shit. Pray tell, where is this subsidy coming from? Very few employers subsidize childcare and the government does not subsidize it except via tax credit that doesn’t even cover 2 months of care. |
Clearly you don't know given your post. Are you that clueless? Yes, most local governments have child care subsidies. Here you go: https://osse.dc.gov/subsidy |
