Explain implications of Arizona abortion ruling to me like I'm 5 years old

AZ just pissed off a whole lot of moderate voters while Dems are celebrating. Plenty of time for more idiot moves to bury Trump and ilk. Let’s end them.

This is what I don't get: they got what they wanted! Are they upset that what they wanted is TOO strict?

Make it make sense.

If by “they” you mean GOP, well then, yes. When has MAGA ever made sense?

Um, easy: border security. That’s what most of us care about, our basic safety, not getting an abortion.

If women don't have the right to manage their own healthcare, then they are second class citizens. that is more important to women than any other issue. Period.

Keep up the crazy rulings, Republicans! The crazier the better! You are guaranteeing a Dem win in the next election.

And that law compromises their care.
And women are such selfish b—-ches they will choose to save their own lives over border security.
What a bunch of whores.

Narrator: Republicans voted against border security. They also are against women's healthcare.

It sounds to me like Trump was trying to stop abortion from being an issue in November, but Arizona's Supreme Court ensured that it will be an issue, in Arizona and beyond, due to the strictness of the law there.

In other words, they would have been happier if this ruling had come about after November, when Trump would have potentially already been elected. Then it wouldn't affect the electability of Republicans throughout the country.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate you helping me connect the dots on this one.

There is also a referendum in Florida. And you can bet every democrat in the country will be running on this, and no republican can claim to be moderate on the issue and trusted to support any legislation once actually in office.

Florida is no longer a safe state for Trump. Previous margins can easily be erased because of this ballot issue.

But, it is Florida. They cannot be counted on to make reasonable decisions. My prediction is that they’ll vote for Trump by large margins, AND pass the referendum.

Trump is actively pushing away the Haley/DeSantis voters. Trump is way less safe than is being portrayed. He’s in trouble.

It carries a sentence of 2-5 years in jail. It's as strict as you can get. It's also based on 19th century law before Arizona was a state. How to you politically spin that as having a serious conversation about abortion? As you say, it's also on the ballot so voters will come out in droves against this draconian law. Arizona was a battleground state. It isn't anymore. And this will reverberate across elections across the country.

Not only that, I can't imagine a scenario in which an embryo less than 14 days old could conceivably pose a risk to the mother's life. It would have to be a situation like, say, fast growing uterine cancer in which case there would be no need for abortion, the medical treatment alone could/would simply destroy the embryo incidentally--even Catholic dogma would be ok with that.

Did they know about ectopic pregnancy in 1864?

They did not, women who had ectopic pregnancies just died. It’s only diagnosable via ultrasound.

It’s also bringing abortion to the forefront. I’m very progressive and so a lot of my news online is obviously progressive news. But I also watch the Today Show and have pretty much watched daily for the last 15 years.

For those who haven’t watched the today show lately the show is very much changed and is now catering very much to an older, possibly more rural audience who still have cable and haven’t gotten rid of it for streaming, etc. The show has really changed and they’ve stopped trying to get a young audience like they were trying to get a decade to go. They did away with their orange room tech segment, entirely, and now there is lots of talk about faith and religion, really easy workouts, like chair yoga, etc.

And yet the past year there have been so many times where they have started the show with “shocking” abortion news like the Alabama IVF issue, and today the Arizona ruling. Not eventually covering it but leading with it and doing a good job of showing the extremes.

It is becoming clear that a lot of people thought anti abortion laws would not apply them, because they are good white Christians, and they are now seeing that theyare applying to them if they get unlucky during pregnancy, or they need fertility treatments. This is a huge sea change compared to what was happening a few years ago.

So why did your precious GOP vote against the border bill? The problem with you MAGAs is that you think everyone is as stupid as you.

Well, as a result of this ruling, some little boys and girls - not many, maybe just a few, maybe only one little boy or girl - will be born rather than butchered.
