Are “Don’t Thread on Me” tags no longer political?

Anonymous

It's a stupid catchphrase about government overreach, so of course it goes down well with the rebellious young, libertarians and MAGAs.

Op here. Clearly I don’t have one myself 😳🤣 but as I mentioned, I keep seeing them around in far greater numbers than I ever did before. I knew there was some political connection but now that the drivers seem more diverse. Not that diversity means you vote one way or another.

Paying extra taxes to buy a license plate supporting the Taxed Enough Already group is peak irony.

Yes it is. I've never understood this at all.

And, yes, for everyone I know who has these plates, they are political.

It makes no sense.

I thought they were the ones who wanted the government to police their bodies and bedrooms?

I just can't believe that's the case in the DMV, one of the most educated and politically engaged areas of the country. It's Tea Party and MAGA now.

I also find it funny that I generally see them on newer, more expensive cars. How tread on can you be, when you can afford that?

It started out as less politically partisan but is now hyper partisan beginning with the tea party and, like the tea party, was put on steroids with MAGA. Especially among the militia and wannabe militia set who think MAGA is somehow going to lead to a more “free” society. These whack jobs will hijack sic semper tyrannis next.

I live in New England and see the Gadsen Flag often on bumper stickers and occasionally displayed in front of people's homes. I interpret it as an expression of a Libertarian, patriotic mindset and as a nod to our region's past as the birthplace of the American Revolution. Of course, I'm sure triggering pearl-clutching people like those posting on this thread is also a motivation for those that display them. Pretty cool that Virginia offers it as a license plate theme.

Now that a mixed race LGBTQ couple who are our neighbors, have recently gotten these tags, I’m wondering if I was incorrect.

What is going on with the popularity?

I mean, the Gadsden Flag is about as political as it gets, going back to the founding of our country.

I do agree it's kind of lost its meaning. And its use to signal hostility to fellow citizens is beyond the pale.

It's not used to signal hostility. It's literally about limits on government power. If anything, it fits perfectly into a leftist oppressor/oppressed narrative except for the fact that it calls for people to be independent in thought and action.

This exactly. What has happened to the left? They’ve been co-opted by some force yet to be revealed. You all used to stand for something!

That's not what the Gadsen flag means in Virginia and south. Everyone I know who flies it or has a VA teaparty license plate is now a MAGA. I can imagine it means something different in New England, but most of us don't live in New England, we live in the DC metro.
