Did you go to college OP? It can be almost nothing but a stream of opinions…

"People who like Elon Musk" is not a protected class.

She then half heartedly said that for some people who are fans of Elon, that would be a plus, and then said “If you’re a douche.”

Am I wrong for thinking this is completely off base, especially for a public college?

No because it is a fact.

Elon Musk is a liar.

He did not invent Tesla.
He did not graduate from UPENN VC bought his degree.
He came to this country and stayed illegally.

There is nothing redeeming about Musk. He is a bigotted dumbass.

The professor gave an opinion so what?

I had professors at UF preaching I survived. I had comp science professors and a psychology professor do way worse.

There is way more to worry about than this.

Professors say all kinds of things. She's a grown up. She can push back or not. Profs who say these things will never (almost never) care if kids spar with them in return.

OP, a tip for future trolling: Something more specific than "math professor" (maybe "Calc TA"?) would make your post sound more like it was written by an actual parent, plus posters on this board would probably have described the school more precisely than just "in college"--like "at a flagship state U".

A first review of your rough draft can be an excellent opportunity to add the details that'll make all your writing more persuasive!

No. Musk is a racist who was born on third base and has taken money from all corners of the authoritarian world to give the perception that he is some sort of genius. If you actually read about him, calling him a douche is being generous.

I can’t believe there are people who don’t think he’s the worst 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe your student should transfer to Liberty University.

Why do you care? Why are you sharing these conversations? Leave your poor kid alone, they're an adult.

The prof is allowed to have that opinion and express it. It's college, not kindergarten and better that you and your kid realize that people have different opinions. And get used to hearing them.

YOU are off base.

I am professor. Would never say things like that personally for the very reason that it might trigger a dcum thread but... it was a joke. Come on.

1. Professors state opinions, popular or unpopular. Get over it. This is literally the point of college, to learn to think critically and not take everything as fact. If you haven’t prepared your child for that, you have failed.

2. Professor happens to be right in this instance, in my opinion.

3. At what stage of life do you plan on ending the helicoptering?

College is full of full of professors like this and they don’t have to hold back on their opinions. It’s been this way forever. Your child will hear all sorts of “opinions” for the next few years.

It's not about Elon Musk, people. It's about the professor who went out of their way to make a personal rant, in class, unprompted, about their own recommendation. Calling someone a "douche" is an opinion, but it's an opinion that earns an F in a college where you are supposed to thinking critically and making cogent arguments.

It's early inappropriate behavior, (minor) abuse of their authority position, and mentally off-kilter. What kind of idiot says "I recommend this book, but someone else, who I hate but can't criticize in any objective or intelligent way, also likes it, so maybe you shouldn't listen to my advice?" He's right, but in a performative way as a living warning sign.

People in healthy families don't go no contact after high school. I'm sorry you couldn't have that experience.
