It’s entirely appropriate for your child’s professors to express their opinions. Your young adult student is there to be exposed to new and conflicting ideas.

Calling people names is not part of an education, give me a break.

Say you’ve never been to college without saying you’ve never been!

But why does it seem like “people who like Joe Biden”—would be?

Calling someone a "douche" is an opinion, but it's an opinion that earns an F in a college where you are supposed to thinking critically and making cogent arguments.

It's early inappropriate behavior, (minor) abuse of their authority position, and mentally off-kilter. What kind of idiot says "I recommend this book, but someone else, who I hate but can't criticize in any objective or intelligent way, also likes it, so maybe you shouldn't listen to my advice?" He's right, but in a performative way as a living warning sign.

I think Musk is a douche but can't stand this type of professor. I guess being a math professor makes it more difficult to proselytize politically so they needed some clunky way to broach the topic lol. Prof probably googled "math books" + Musk, Trump, Tucker, etc. Pathetic.

Am I wrong for thinking this is completely off base, especially for a public college?

Are you serious? People are allowed opinions, especially in college. College is not actually a safe space to coddle your precious snowflake's perception of the world, instilled by you.

Sorry your feelings got hurt that DD's professor doesn't like your icon Elon.

The test for you sincerity on this, PP, is Would you have the same response of OP’s DD’s prof had made the same remarks about Biden supporters or Bill Gates or Anthony Fauci fans?
If yes—that’s great! I’m all for free expression.

But if your response would have been to come unhinged because “that professor is obviously a QAnon wacko who has no right to be in a position of influence over our kids” then you don’t actually support free expression. You just support free expression that you agree with.

Do Bill Gates or Anthony Fauci make opinionated comments that are as douchey as Elon Musk does? Or do they just stick to a certain level of unopinionated professionalism, and you don't agree with they professional opinions?

This is exactly the point.
If you are in favor of a professors right to state their opinion that “someone who likes [insert name of person here] is a douche”—then you should support them being free to state this opinion NO MATTER WHAT THE NAME OF THE PERSON iN THE BRACKET IS!

The content of WHY you might agree or disagree with the professors opinion is not relevant.

DP with top 5 grad + law degree.

Professor was way out of line.

I've studied with some of the foremost thinkers in the world and, without exception, they NEVER revealed their political beliefs.

In fact, in most instances, they didn't reveal their positions on any issue.

I don't think this is a fan or not-a-fan issue. It's name calling, immature, and basically stating the prof's opinion. Not appropriate in a college setting.

Prof should have said, A plus for those who are fans, not so much for those who aren't. Recognize both sides without adding name-calling and a clear personal opinion.

College is for expanding worldview, not to be force-fed someone else's POV in a class setting.

And I am no fan of Musk.

Nope, these are college students not elementary.

If they can not sit in a class and listen to a teacher of any subject say "Elon Musk is a douche" or something like that they do not belong in college.

I had years of listening to my professor's Proselytism in class University of Florida. Now at UF the discourse is RW garbage all the time. Ben Sasse is in charge. What do you all think Professors are going to sprew now if they lean RW? And now others have to be weary what they say if they want to keep their jobs.

One of mine went to NC State a few years ago. They had professors in the Engineering school praying in the class and asking them to participate.

OP's kid is a twat who needs to realize the world does not revolve around her own stupidity.

The fact is Elon Musk is a douche there is nothing unfactual about that statement. And this is college if she doesn't like the professor change sections drop the class.

College is where you learn that others can have opinions different from yours.

Plus, Elon is objectively a douche.

have you never been to college? If a student does or says something stupid, a professor will make insulting comments.

These are adults, not Kers.

Taxpayers are paying the salary of the professor who should act like a professional, grown adult. The comment was immature and did not belong in the classroom. Look beyond whether you like Musk or not because that’s not the point.

Professional grown adults also have opinions and share them.

Too many people who are easily triggered these days.
